This is the first sports analytics paper I ever published and it is the only one on baseball that I have wrote. The goal of the paper is to isolate the pitcher/batter matchup from the impact of defense and base runners, and then test whether, in general, a hitter or pitcher controls the outcome of the matchup. One of the "fun" results of the paper is that, in 2004, by the methods developed in the paper, Barry Bonds was the two best hitters in MLB. His total value created was more than twice the second highest among hitters (Scott Rolen was second). https://lnkd.in/gxCnUX5r

I’m the Founder of Mental Fitness, LLC. I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Speaker, and NASM Certified Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coach. I believe if you "Master Your Thinking, You’ll Master Your Life."
Idea for baseball: After the 6th inning, allow all fans to sit in all the non-purchased seats. This could be done with a simple, first come first serve, green light = open seat, scan your ticket, and it turns red (and is now yours) technology. Yes, this tech would cost a bit, but how cool would it be?! The later innings would be more exciting. It would be a better fan experience. Sales would go up as people would stay longer. It would also likely attract more fans in the first place! Serious question: Anyone know any baseball execs I could convince to try it within the MLB?

Let's see... Major League Baseball has plans to eventually add two more teams, and Austin is one of the largest U.S. markets without an existing NFL, NBA or MLB team. Most of you know I am a HUGE baseball fan! I also like collecting baseball cards and enjoy the process of looking for both valuable and meaningful cards. And there’s a difference. Some cards are valuable because they’re rare or are a misprint of some kind. Other cards are meaningful because they are of a favorite player or era or team. For example, I’m partial to cards from the 70s and 80s because that’s when I was growing up and have a lot of fond memories of baseball, both playing and watching. The cards don’t have a lot of resale value, but they are meaningful to me and remain in the collection because of that. What’s interesting to me is that misprinted cards are actually quite valuable. I have a handful of cards that have errors or misprints that were later corrected, but the misprinted cards are actually worth more than the “corrected” card. As I think about business, especially brainstorming and innovation, we may occasionally come across a “misprinted” idea…one that doesn’t fit the mold and wasn’t intended. As you’re considering ideas from your team, never overlook or cast aside a “misprint” idea; it may be one of your most valuable!

The MLB All-Star break marks the unofficial midway point of the season. It's certainly a break for the players, but it's also a chance to evaluate where teams are at before making a second -half push. You can watch the game (and the Home Run Derby) and stick to sports, or you can use it as a chance to spring board into bigger business conversations like checking in with your team to see if you're on track to reach 2024 goals. It's just one way to think outside the box scores and make sports useful in business. #conversationstarters #businesscommunication
