I had a great time at The Cut & Craft Restaurants Leeds last week, capturing a flythrough video for their first birthday party. When it comes to genuine political changes for small businesses in Australia, I recently asked my local Federal MP to table the motion for GST reform in food businesses.
Changes could be one way to soften the crippling blow being dealt to the hospitality industry.
💡 My idea is this:
Either remove GST from restaurant prepared food, or add GST to the raw goods.
Removing GST from each transaction will support SME cash-flow by reducing the quarterly GST bill. And this is certainly the preference.
If the cost of goods are GST-inclusive this could make it a more even playing field for the operators that purchase items GST free, transform the food item into a meal and then charge GST on the final product.
Any GST incurred during this process can be claimed as a deduction.
‼️ Why does the SME sector bear the brunt of the cost of living crisis, when fossil fuel companies get huge subsidies?
I feel it’s time to level the playing field for SME.

He penned the concept of ‘Unreasonable Hospitality’, a philosophy based on transforming ordinary transactions into extraordinary experiences.
He highlights 3 key points for achieving success when serving people:
1. Be present. Care about what you are doing. Listen to what people are saying and not saying.
2. Take what you do seriously, without taking yourself too seriously.
3. Give people a sense of genuine belonging: ‘One size fits one’. Don’t treat people like a commodity.
According to Will, we live in a service economy. This means that making good products is just not enough. He goes beyond to say that it’s not the cost of the gesture that matters; it’s how it makes people feel.

Consider leveraging hotel guest data at every touchpoint, meeting guests where they are, and taking notes from hotels on communication. 🔍🏨
Don't forget to provide a procedural experience and reach out to each other (restaurant/hotel) when in need.
Remember to lead your restaurant from the floor, not the boardroom.
Ensure the communication accommodates the needs of both. Integration between PMS and restaurant systems is key. 🔑 and can’t happen soon enough.
At the end of the day, people remember people, and energy comes from the restaurant as a focal point for mutual benefits.
And if even Joel Montaniel can’t get a 7:30 reservation on a Friday night in the city, then there is something greater to be said.
