We are thrilled to announce that The Little Village Chamber of Commerce received the Community Champion Award from Verizon at yesterday's 'Connected by Culture' event!
A big thank you to Steven E. Shaw, Community Engagement Director for State Government Affairs at Verizon for his invaluable partnership and support. This award is a testament to our collaborative efforts to strengthen the ties within the Latino community. We look forward to continuing our work together to create meaningful impact!
What an inspiring few days at Stir to Action's ABCs of the New Economy Festival, hearing from community groups, councils and charities across the UK working to create a more just, inclusive economy that puts people and planet ahead of profit.
I had the pleasure of participating in a panel alongside Emily Urquhart from Oxfordshire County Council and John Atherton from Preston Co-operative Development Network. We reflected on the role of councils, anchor institutions, and communities in creating fairer, more resilient local economies.
Our 'Owned by Oxford' partnership is working to address the stark inequality in our city. We're using an approach to local economic development called Community Wealth Building, that focuses on keeping wealth circulating in the local economy and redirecting wealth in ways that benefit local communities.
Traditional Community Wealth Building approaches have centred the role of councils and large 'anchor' institutions (like universities and NHS trusts) in creating more inclusive economies. We believe that these institutional collaborators have a vital role to play, but that community leadership is key.
We are working to centre Black, Minoritised and economically marginalised voices in local economic forums, because the people being failed by our unfair economy are 'experts by experience' in how to reshape it.
We’re building Economic Democracy by working with community leaders at the grassroots. We're supporting the development of community-led initiatives and social enterprises that build community power and redirect wealth into communities marginalised by our mainstream economy.
In other words... let's put the 'Community' back into Community Wealth Building! ✨
When I was 22, I made the decision to create an idea called Dyoowe, LLC. Initially conceived as a platform for the beauty products I desired for my personal use, it evolved beyond a mere collection to embody a profound marketing significance. It transformed into a yearning for deeper and more meaningful relationships to nurture throughout my professional journey. It blossomed into an authentic dialogue about business success, extending from me to you.
Dyoowe has assumed various forms, but the current iteration is my favorite. We specialize in improving marketing strategies, enhancing public relations efforts, and fortifying community engagement initiatives. My mission extends beyond merely partnering with businesses; it involves fostering communication with them. I choose to nurture relationships, and that is how Dyoowe has come to fruition.
In the course of my life, I've experienced intense highs and lows. I've grappled with the contrasts of life, as well as the dynamics between myself and others. The year 2023 marked a pivotal moment for me, leaving an indelible impression. Leaving Los Angeles, opening a business, graduating with my Master's degree; it radiated the extremes of life, teaching me to embrace love and find equilibrium.
I've learned the importance of treating others with kindness and sharing my successes. As I anticipate the trajectory of my consulting firm in the upcoming year, I eagerly look forward to continuing the lifelong journey of nurturing meaningful relationships with you all.
Never. Give. Up.

Austin, a rapidly growing city, is facing deep opportunity and housing crises that disproportionately impact African American communities. As the area has become less affordable, many long-time Black residents can no longer call their hometown neighborhoods home. Additionally, ongoing racial inequities and a lack of culturally sensitive spaces have exacerbated unwelcoming feelings in some areas. To attract and retain Black talent, the city must prioritize expanding affordable housing options like rent control and land trusts. Increased support for Black-owned businesses, arts, and community centers through targeted grants would strengthen identity and belonging. Training and elevating Black civic leaders will also be key to catalyzing the Black population's growth. These leaders can advocate effectively for their communities’ needs. By addressing challenges to affordability, representation, and leadership development, Austin can become a more equitable place where diversity thrives for years to come. #AALI

"Capital B Atlanta spoke with three Black Atlantans who are imagining what public safety and justice look like outside the existing system by mediating restorative conferences, community building, and educating others. They spoke about their work, why they believe it is beneficial for Black people, and why they focus their efforts outside the existing system as opposed to attempting to reform it."

Camino Research Institute (CRI) delivered its 2024 Western North Carolina (WNC) Latino Community Strengths & Needs Assessment Report, shared by CRI Manager Sarai Ordonez, who was the excellent project lead.
The survey mostly captures the strengths, needs, gaps, and actual preferences and priorities of Hispanic and Latino/a/e people in WNC and in particular the undocumented population, whose voices are rarely heard, much less understood. 91% of survey respondents are immigrants from 16 different countries of origin, with 71% from Mexico.
What do survey respondents value most about the Latino people and community? Latinos recognize and take pride in their work ethic and entrepreneurship, as well as volunteering, cultural diversity, dependability, and sense of family and unity.
Latino concerns include the need for greater access to healthcare, including dental care, preventative healthcare, vision care, and mental healthcare; access to systems, including healthcare systems, with greater bilingual competency; and access to drivers licenses to increase system engagement and improve overall quality of life.
I encourage everyone to read the report and learn more about our Latino/a/e community. I serve on Camino's WNC Community Advisory Board—the only non-Latino on a board of fabulous Latino leaders and difference makers.

Over the past two years, Camino Research Institute has collaborated with trusted community organizations in Western North Carolina for the Latino Community Strengths and Needs Assessment. Our goal with this mixed method study is to better understand the experiences, strengths, and needs of the local Latino communities. We are excited to announce the release of our Western NC Latino Community Strengths and Needs Assessment report!
We heard from 512 Latinos and 11 community leaders. Throughout this project, I have had the privilege of working with an amazing group of individuals committed to serving the Latino community. Thank you to each community advisory board member and co-author who were instrumental in this accomplishment. I hope the results respectfully portray the WNC Latino community and increase resources throughout the area!
