There has been a vast reduction in suppliers within the fresh produce industry. The supply chain was impressively resilient during the pandemic, but further global disruption from the Ukraine war, extreme weather, labour shortages, border changes, interest rates and land management schemes have significantly impacted food prices and availability. With the increased difficulty and expense of importing products and the impact of international disputes, the UK fresh produce industry needs to support its capability as a producer. For this to happen, there must be adequate opportunities for innovative market entrants. New entrants with fresh ideas are crucial in optimising the success of the horticultural industry, thus improving the supply chain's resilience. Currently, there is a small pool of dominant fresh produce suppliers. These larger enterprises tend to benefit from the resources that allow a more specialised and scientific production. However, should any of these large businesses be unable to supply the demand, there are very few growers left that could step in and plug the gap. Without smaller farms or support for new producers, self-sufficiency for a growing population will be even more challenging, thus reducing its viability for future generations. #wholesale #eatseasonal #familybusiness #NCGM #WesternInternational #NewSpitalfields #Ukproduce #sustainability #backbritishfarming #Britishfarmers

By ensuring that Canada's dairy farmers produce only enough to meet the needs of Canadians, supply management helps the sector reduce waste and improve sustainability, prevents wild fluctuations in the farm-gate price of milk, and enhances Canada’s food sovereignty and security. Rather than looking outward for our food, a strong Canadian dairy sector means we can be less dependent on foreign countries to meet Canada’s food requirements. #CdnDairy #sustainability #NetZero2050

Why it is important to change mentalities and go for direct trade models with less intermediaries : https://lnkd.in/eVcfxaxS ☕ For now, having cheap (low quality) coffee for European/US customers equal modern slavery for producers in other part of the world. Let's take an example from our Finca in Chiapas : Marcellino 👨🌾, "average worker", with over 20 years of experience, earns around 240MXN (14.5USD, 13CHF) a day. On the other hand, he harvests around 70kg of coffee cherries daily which give around 14kg of exportable green coffee which give around 11kg of roasted "ready to be consumed coffee". Some basic math 👨🔬 : ➡ Marcellino makes 0.11MXN (0.0066USD, 0.0060CHF) per 5 grams of Nespresso capsules ➡ A Cosi capsule (https://lnkd.in/eG9fNQMc) is sold around 9.91MXN (0.60USD, 0.54CHF) This is more or less a 9500% 😳 value discrepancy between the same amount of coffee harvested by Marcellino and a capsule of coffee bought by a customer in Switzerland. Obviously there is more to take into account (cost of living in each country, other costs such as farm exploitation, export, freight, R&D, roasting facilities buildings, etc etc) in the equation and probably Marcellino doesn't have a formal education/life ambitions/goals... But the real questions behind this example are : ❓Does Marcellino deserves his conditions of living while we consume our coffee? ❓How would you feel if for 1USD of your hard work, someone else is making 90USD? This is what why we are building a disruptive business model on this exact same topic at Akmē Nutrition, shifting the value creation where it should be. This is a shame for such a big companies, promoting "fair trade" while going for a monopolistic approach. 👇 #coffee #fairtrade #directtrade #modernslavery

DAIRY PLANET - Edition 217 • Milk is retreating in some pretty important places, but Australia is finally up!! (albeit a little bit) • We know NZ WMP shipments to China is down, but will zero duty entice a rebound? • US cows produce a lot more with less, is that a “sustainability” story? • While we’re in the US it looks like cows are migrating inland!! So I was shocked at my Fufu Agege saying hi to me at £1. That’s the result of Supply Chain, particularly cross border logistics, which in 2024 is growing geometrically as migration grows arithmetically. The ‘craze’ for homegrown food is an indicator of an opportunity to leverage on ‘feeding Africans in the diaspora’. A backward value chain trip starts from the the retail store, to the production team, who import the processed fufu paste, which was produced largely in west Africa, after cassava was harvested peeled, soaked, processed and dried. It’s all about food (directly and indirectly). We can’t eat laptops and phones, but we can work on data which is generated by stakeholders at every milestone of the journey to improve agriculture production, packaging, storage, intercontinental logistics, customs brokerage, last mile delivery and retail. Wherever you are, your goal of a better living is predicated on FOOD, for the body, soul, spirit and mind that is sustainable till death. Give a thought today. #Food #Crossborder #Agriculture #Fufu #Japa #Migration
