#LivreparaProtestar | Rethinking the foundations of the type of democracy we want is fundamental to the full and safe exercise of the right to protest. This is what the Executive Director of Justiça Global, Gláucia Marinho, said during a speech at the Nas Ruas e Nas Redes event – held in São Paulo on 4 and 5 June, together with the Boll Foundation – as part of the campaign #FreeToProtest. Find out more about the initiative on the website for ARTIGO 19, ARTICLE 19's Brazil and South America office. https://artigo19.org/

This is a GREAT organization with which to partner! Accords International is very diverse in its approach and casts a wide net so that many can both #learn and become involved in alternative forms of #conflictresolution. This includes #youth #diversion initiatives, as well as #restorativejustice practices and #programs that support and encourage better #understanding of the #psychology and #cognitivedevelopment of our #youth and #emergingadults.

Some uneasy reading here. Where would you stand from a due diligence point of view? After all, due diligence is more than just looking what the law says. Due diligence also echoes moral convictions. But, would this case simply be a matter of people breaking the law and therefore having to face the consequences? Or should we ask ourselves whether the consequences are proportionate to the disruption caused, and argue that the motives and concerns behind the actions justify the disruption? Following the punishment handed out today, the question is whether civil rights in the UK are healthy, under threat, or already choked to death. In the words of the UN special rapporteur on environmental defenders: “Today is a dark day for peaceful environmental protest in the UK. This sentence should shock the conscience of any member of the public. It should also put all of us on high alert on the state of civic rights and freedoms in the United Kingdom." And... discuss (but please keep it civil)... https://lnkd.in/eSctUezH

Delighted to be part of this focus group of ex-civil servants for POLITICO Europe Europe with the fab Aggie Chambre Much of our discussion, and Aggie’s conclusions, echo themes from my Reform Think Tank report ‘Civil Unrest’, published late last month. In short, civil servants think there is *a lot* that needs reforming about Whitehall, and their criticisms have much in common with some of their fiercest detractors. A more constructive dialogue, and a more collaborative effort, would be much more effective in unlocking the change that the public deserve, making government serve them much more efficiently, directly and dynamically.

‼️ In connection with the incident that happened during the meeting, on the instructions of the Defender a working group went to Tavush Region. ‼️ According to the information spread in the media and social platforms, a car tried to ram into the crowd during the assembly in Tavush region, as a result of which one of the residents was injured. In connection with the above, a discussion procedure was started on the initiative of Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan. The staff of the Defender is monitoring the media publications related to the incident. Corresponding letters will be sent to the competent state authorities with the request to make the circumstances of the mentioned case the subject of a detailed and comprehensive investigation. We consider it necessary to emphasize that on the instructions of the Defender a working group went to Tavush region to carry out work on the spot with the regional department. At the same time, according to the information a group of people were arrested on suspicion of hooliganism and transferred to Noyemberyan and Tumanyan Police Departments. On the instructions of the Defender, a rapid response group went to the above-mentioned departments in order to visit the persons deprived of their liberty and to get acquainted with the state of ensuring their rights on the spot. The Human Rights Defender emphasizes once again that any manifestation of violence is highly unacceptable and condemnable. Each case should receive a proper legal assessment, and the guilty should be held accountable. At the same time, the Defender urges the participants of the protest, the police and all people present at the assembly place to show restraint, to ensure the peaceful course of the assembly and the requirements set by the legislation. It is also important that in this situation public and political figures as well as media, not only exclude any speech and behavior promoting hatred, violence or intolerance, but also oppose them. Public solidarity can be ensured only through a tolerant and sensitive attitude towards others and through respectful dialogue. And at this moment, more than ever, we need such a supportive environment.

Well written satire about "government on life support" This is an example, from the Prospect Magazine, written by Alan Rushbridger, demonstrating political commentary which is strongly expressed and fearless. Just an example of the way the media in the UK critiques governments, which is part of its essential role. https://lnkd.in/eBpzzSJW #publicservice #governmentsattite #politicalcommentary
