This family-based counseling program supports students from their junior year of high school through college graduation, providing holistic support every step of the way. Catherine Marroquin, Senior Director of College to Career, shares: "College Connect youth are a mix of students from various backgrounds - first in their families to go to college, English Language Learners, recently immigrated, undocumented, intersectional, resilient, and determined to go to college." Our JLI Educator Fellowship Program prepares teachers to lead students through the Effective Communicators Course, a 45-day instructional plan that guides students from start to finish through a Journalistic Learning project. Not only does the program develop confident educators and future-ready students, but it also connects classrooms to communities in meaningful ways. By investigating local issues, interviewing community experts, and publishing their findings for an authentic audience, students who participate in Journalistic Learning civically engage with their town, city, county, or state. #education #studentjournalism #nonprofit

Pop Quiz! What does the term ‘Summer Slide’ mean? I hadn’t heard of this term before learning about Page Ahead Children's Literacy Program and joining the Board, so if it’s new to you, you’re not alone! The Summer Slide is the tendency for students, especially those from low-income families, to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year during the summer months when they aren’t in school and don’t have easy access to reading material. It's essential to recognize that summer learning loss accounts for a staggering 80% of the achievement gap between low-income students and their more advantaged peers. The ripple effects of the summer slide are profound and can significantly impact students' future success.   Enter Page Ahead Children's Literacy Program and a key reason I got involved on the Board. The Book Up Summer (BUS) program addresses this achievement gap before it happens. BUS builds home libraries and keeps kids’ reading skills up over summer break: K–2 students at majority low-income elementary schools choose 12 new books from a book fair at school, at no cost to them or their families, to keep and read during the summer and beyond.   As I do every year, I am raising money for Page Ahead's Book Up Summer Program to help give every student in Washington access to read, learn, and succeed! It's Spring. It's Monday. It's Solar Eclipse day. Most importantly though - It is the day WITS kicks off our campaign to give books to students and teachers. This year I am joined by mentors, colleagues and volunteers on TEAM LEARN ACADEMY. Our Team this year has a goal of raising $14,000 to ensure that the students of LEARN have their very own books for the summer and every day that comes after.  You can help us reach our goal by donating to my page here. https://lnkd.in/ep_sJwDP I have been doing this for nearly a decade now. Everyday I think about reading. I know that likely most of you don't. Yes, you read, everyday, probably a lot of the moments of your day involve reading - but you probably don't really think about it. Yet, 56% of adults in America are functionally illiterate, not able to comprehend text above a 6th grade level. For comparison, most American newspapers are written at an 11th grade level. WITS programs are uniquely designed as a preventative measure to that statistic. We work with youth at the critical early elementary ages to ensure strong habits and positive relationships to reading and learning that provide the foundation for all future learning. The WITS Summer Books campaign raises funds that directly support the purchase and distribution of over 22,000 books to teachers and students. The data and research are clear – children who have access to print reading materials have better literacy outcomes. Join me!
