⚖️ HMP Highpoint is a category C training and resettlement prison, housing a combined capacity of 1310 prisoners.
Last month, we sat down with a few of our team and our partners at DSA Connect as they shared the amazing work that has been going on in the new Digital Workshop at HMP Highpoint.
In collaboration with Xerox and DSA Connect, the rollout of this workshop has seen tremendous progress in our efforts to reduce electronic waste and create a more sustainable future for the UK Prison Estate. Not only that, but it is providing an immeasurable lifeline to the prisoners it employs, offering individuals a chance to earn accredited qualifications and skills to support them in achieving successful rehabilitation and ultimately gaining employment after release. 📈 🙌
This initiative would not have been possible without the commitment and dedication of the teams at DSA Connect and Xerox, who have been ably supported by an onsite team working tirelessly to gain customer and prisoner buy-in and make this initiative work in an exceptionally busy, challenging category C environment. 👏
👥 A massive shout-out to those involved in the roll-out and continuing development of this initiative: Harry BenhamSteve O'NeillAlex Taylor, Warren Higgs, Steve PhillipsIan A.Tim Broomfield, Karen Gedge, Mark Robinson and others.

In "History of Policing: Policing, Capitalism, and Class," I look into the historical evolution of policing and its intricate ties with capitalist structures and class dynamics. The lecture examines how policing has been utilized as a tool to maintain social order, often reinforcing the interests of the ruling class. I discuss the origins of modern policing in the context of industrialization, highlighting how economic changes necessitated new forms of social control. The talk also touches upon the disproportionate impact of policing on marginalized communities, illustrating the systemic biases ingrained in law enforcement practices. Check it out below if you wish.

“Good content starts with understanding what the users need”
This contract at Justice Digital is the gift that keeps on giving. In addition to visiting nearly 10 prisons (story for another post), the CPD opportunities are genuinely incredible. The course “Content Accessibility is a Superpower” by Katherine Moonan and Martin Glancy covered practical tips to testimonials of people with lived experience. It was brilliant!
Some of my (many) takeaways:
- It’s good practice to place the most important information at the beginning of a phrase rather than at the end.
- Aim at 25 words per sentence and 2 sentences per paragraph.
- Sharing documents before a presentation can be beneficial for many reasons; one of them is giving people a chance to change background colours!

YOUR JUDGE IS KNOWN FOR BEING HARD AND STRICT, SO MAKE SURE TO BE PREPARED AND RESPECTFUL.
Different judges have varying sentencing styles; some may be more lenient, while others may take the opposite approach.
INDICTED AND FACING PRISON.
My name is Marc Blatstein. In 2006, I, too, was Indicted and convicted of a felony and lost my medical license. To call this a life-altering event, at best, was an understatement. With work, I was able to get my license reinstated in full —
· The Lesson: Prison is Temporary.
My goal in this series is to provide you with the information you’ll need to survive and navigate these times. Knowledge and Preparation will help build back the Confidence you’ll need throughout this process.
· Since you’ve heard that the DOJ and Feds have been asking questions, their case against you is mostly complete, with a 98% Conviction Rate.
· Hiring a legal team doesn’t just mean they have experience; they also need a proven track record of successfully defending cases like yours.
· The choices you make here today - will help you tomorrow.
Approach all Judges with Respect and Do Not draw the Anger of the Court (i.e., Witness Tampering). A well-written NARRATIVE and Allocution may move the hardest of judges.
Decisions will be based on various factors, including the Sentencing Guidelines, Enhancements, your Criminal History, Personal Safety Factors, are just some of the content that can sway the Probation Officer's Recommendation regarding your sentence and placement to your judge.
· Probation Officer's (PO) Recommendation: Your PO is the Most Important Person in Your Life.
· Sentencing Guidelines: Verify that your Unofficial PSR is accurate.
· Personal Safety Factors: If you were Not in Charge, Not the Kingpin, the PSR should reflect this; being wrong puts you at a possibly higher security level.
· Enhancements: Verify and challenge inaccurate facts with your attorney, if relevant.
· Your Criminal History.
However, as a defendant, your efforts in preparing for your PSI can make a significant difference. Accepting responsibility for your actions and genuinely expressing remorse for the victims you have harmed can work in your favor.
· A skilled attorney who understands "their" judge's likes and dislikes beforehand is crucial.
· A well-written Personal Narrative will be integral to your Presentence Report and reflect the unique perspective woven together into your Report.
· Organized and prepared accurately and comprehensively before being given to the probation officer, again 1-2 weeks before the interview, they allow them to be included in your official PSR—Under Seal.
