Tuesday the 19th of March marked the official kick-off of the Athari Bantu Launch to Impact programme. Unlike other programmes we have run in the past, this one is especially unique for a number of reasons. 1. The selection for this programme was very competitive because only five founders were selected. An intimate cohort allows for collaboration and co-creation between NGO founders. 2. We selected NGO founders who’s ideas could SCALE. In this programme we are priming NGO founders to develop solutions that can grow over time and lead to sustainable development. 3. It is a female-only cohort. There is a lot to be said about the overwhelming number of female NGO founders. We are excited to be empowering women to contribute to the continents developmental agendas. About the programme The Launch to Impact Programme is one of a few programmes run by Athari Bantu. This is an intensive eight-week programme that focuses on early-stage NGO founders, ensuring that their non-profits are well-positioned to scale, access funding and form strategic partnerships. In a recent check-in, #AVPN's gender fund grantee partner, Ishrat Jahan from Nomi Network , shared "We've been used to working with funders who were more focused on ensuring our programs are delivered, and data on the number of women we can reach. This takes our focus away from quality and impact, and it doesn't give us enough room to learn and adapt to ensure that women receive quality services. Through the #unrestrictedfund, we were able to #pilot, #test, #learn, #retest, and see where we could improve our programs to be more effective. By learning, we were able to #reposition some of our funding to meet some of the gaps we found in our strategies". Another grantee partner, Javed Hussein from Sindh Community Foundation (Pakistan) shared that "...This kind of flexible funding is crucial to sustain and improve our organization in ways often overlooked by other funders, such as capacity building for staff, institutional development, and investment in vehicles to support program sustainability". As with Ishrat and Javed, we have received rich testimonials of positive impact from other grantee partners (https://lnkd.in/g_tcFSHj) too, who received flexible funding from the #genderfund and others. Right from the start, AVPN has adopted a #trustbased approach in supporting #nonprofitorganizations from across #Asia, to achieve their goals, by a)making available #flexiblefunding from its grantmaking initiatives and b) establishing and investing in a relationship of #trust, #openness and #mutualaccountability. Based on experience gathered from designing and executing a series of #philanthropicfunds ('https://lnkd.in/gJ3jf2qK') tied to specific cohorts of #SDGs, we believe that these grantee organizations are deeply aware of the gaps that impede their progress and the injection of flexible funds allows them to plug these properly. Also, a big shout out to our funders like Micron Foundation, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Quantedge Advancement Initiative, TARGET FOUNDATION and several others, who took a chance on us when we shared our vision of practicing trust-based grant making!!! Afghan women live in the world's most severe women's rights situation and are in desperate need of assistance. Strengthening Livelihood Opportunities is one of our project's goals! 📣 Developing entrepreneurial skills and improving opportunities. 📣 Supporting women-led businesses to grow and succeed. 📣 Providing networks of mentors and entrepreneurial associations. 📣 Providing Seed Capital to start and strengthen women's businesses. Improving Employment Access to the private sector, apprenticeships, and vocational training. A Holistic Approach Simply increasing income is not enough. It is essential that women can control how they use their money, which requires changing social norms. UN Women's approach also focuses on changing gender norms. How You Can Help? In your Project Description Section, in the Technical Proposal, remember to include the following important details; 1.     Project aim, purpose and objectives. 2.     Describe specific activity; what will be done; who will do it, how will it be done, where will it be done; who are the targets. 3.     What will be achieved? How will the activities lead to the results/ what evidence do you have to prove the activities will actually lead to the projected results? Evidence? Studies? Theories? Models? Practices etc. 4.     How will the lessons learned from previous project be integrated and applied? 5.     What unique programmatic approach will be infused in this project to make it innovative? 6.     What are the interconnections with intersectionalities; climate change, gender inclusivity, SDGs etc? 7.     Project beneficiaries; aggregated by gender, number and gender? 8.     How does the project aligns with the donor priorities? 9.     What value for money do you explicitly and implicitly express in the project? 10. What is your organization experience explicitly and/or implicitly expressed in the project? By demonstrating how your past experience and lessons learned will shape the project or continuation of the previous outcomes, you are also indirectly demonstrating organizational experience. Happy International Women’s Day🚺👩💻👩🏾🎓. This year's theme, "Inspire Inclusion," resonates deeply with us as we reflect on some of our past projects. From contributing to the fundraising efforts for a co-working space exclusively for migrant women in Switzerland to raising funds for a project to empower rural women in Zimbabwe with essential business skills, these initiatives show our commitment to inclusion🌎🤝. Through these initiatives, we have learned that equipping women with business skills can enhance their economic independence and when female migrants are equipped with leadership skills, they can bring a diversity of perspectives which can increase the company's cultural competence. To celebrate IWD, we will spotlight 2 organizations we supported in the past. These organizations are making significant strides in empowering women, and their outstanding work deserves recognition: ▶️PHENOMENAL WOMEN GLOBAL (PWG): A nonprofit based in Switzerland and Uganda with a mission to connect, advance, and empower women and girls by supporting their personal and professional growth; developing leadership skills; coaching, and mentoring. In 2020/2021, we collaborated with PWG to support their crowdfunding campaign, assist in proposal writing, and connect them with potential donors for the Women’s Hub project. Visit their page and check out their upcoming strategic leadership and career development events designed for women. ▶️ FEPA - Fonds für Entwicklung und Partnerschaft in Afrika: A Swiss nonprofit that supports self-help projects in Zimbabwe and South Africa. The focus is on building youth leadership skills, increasing youth participation in politics, and empowering rural women through activism. Fepa supports local initiatives by people who are committed to social justice, human rights, and democracy. In 2019, our founder collaborated with fepa to raise funds for a livelihood initiative, to provide entrepreneurship training for rural women. The program assists women in establishing their businesses and facilitates access to capital for financing their agricultural projects.
