Cumbria Children & Young People's Voluntary Sector Reference Group. I attended my first VSRG meeting this week on behalf of Angels...to be honest, I think I'm still recovering. Firstly, it was great to meet third sector colleagues, to hear about the incredible work that they're doing with children and young people throughout Cumbria. Yet, it was incredibly sad to hear that we are still not reaching enough young people, especially those with mental ill-health. I know from my work in local schools that it is a very real thing. For many of our young people, just getting into school is a massive challenge and they don't all make it. Is this a new epidemic born of the 21st century and if so is there a cure? I don't have the answers. I listen to the debates, some of them resonate, especially around social media - when did we all become keyboard warriors? I like to think that in the not too distant future, Angels will be able to work with some of these young people; listening, sharing their stories, building resilience and telling their truths. In the meantime, my prayers are for them, Angels and my colleagues as we all continue just trying to put one foot in front of the other.

Home-Start UK’s chief executive, Peter Grigg, spoke in Parliament to help launch the First 1001 Days manifesto today. The First 1001 Days group is a coalition of over 200 charities and professionals supporting children in the critical first 1001 days of life. The manifesto calls for urgent support for vulnerable babies and follows warnings by the Academy of Medical Sciences that children’s physical and mental health needs are being neglected. The five headline asks in the First 1001 Days manifesto are: 1.      An ambitious cross-government strategy to support babies’ healthy development 2.      Invest more in prevention 3.      Tackle health inequalities so that all babies have a good start to life 4.      Develop a workforce plan for children‘s social care and the early years 5.      A rapid review of the tax and benefits system for parents and carers of under-2s   Our work with families and young children shows us ever day how vital those early days are and we are so proud that Home-Start is involved in this important work.   You can read the manifesto here: https://lnkd.in/efeV3h7b #First1001Days #HereForFamilies #ManifestoForBabies

What glimmers of hope are you seeing in your community that other health equity leaders, philanthropic funders, and investors could learn from? For us, the answer is the work of our investees that removes barriers to good health placed in front of some communities based on race or income. By joining together, stakeholders in different sectors can unite to advocate for better policies and systems that give everyone a fair and just opportunity to live their healthiest life. An Order is made up of many little acts. Supporting a project is one thing as we also do. A fine example of that is our constant support of the work of Chrissy Sykes and My Body Is My Body. Yet the main parallel effects of Solomon are in the small things. Lots of such acts add up to big ones. I, for example, am trying to support three people who are outside my home circle. All have different maladies, but a regular chat keeps up the spirits. That is all that we ask of our members. Grand gestures, gilded uniforms and baubles are not the ways of Solomon. Nor is the making of profit over purpose but in assisting our fellow beings. We urge and ask that all of our members help in whatever small ways they can. We do not expect large donations or grand gestures in pursuit of glory. It is the small humane acts which define us. Amaury Tchibozo in Benin has proved this by his acts of kindness and those of his volunteers. They have not shouted about it but good things get done on slender resources. All of our Hub managers have shown what can be accomplished in their localities with a bit of effort and dedication. That is all that we can ask of you. The Order functions because people globally do lots of work, much of it unheralded, in their localities. So when someone says that they can see little of what happens I say, look about you. Try reading about what is actually occurring, and by the way, what are you doing to make things better? We can show what we are doing. We can prove what we are accomplishing. We can reveal that ours is not a path of personal enrichment, but to enrich the lives of others by way of positive action. We desire no acclamation but work to prove our dedication and contribution to making the world we live in just a little bit better.
