A year ago this week, we had the opportunity to officially hire Kate Lagasse as one of our newest AEs. Kate has crushed it since day 1. Why am I posting this??? Because when Kate joined Booster, she wasn't a seasoned sales person. She had spent 9.5 years teaching middle school students math. So why did we choose Kate over more seasoned sales reps? In my opinion --- sales is mostly about the soft skills...the hunter mentality. The thick skin it takes to hear no over, and over, and over again, and continuing to move forward. As Kate made it very clear --- she had spent 9.5 years "selling" math to people who wanted nothing to do with what she was selling. THAT is the mindset of sales. So, if you are a Sales Leader looking to hire new AEs...be willing to open up your candidate pool and give some "non-traditional" folks a shot. You may be surprised with what you find!

Excited to be working with my former client Tamir B. on a series of content on business particularities in the #DACH and #Israeli markets. For my part, I have been working with the DACH region on a regular basis throughout my career. One thing that has arisen again and again is a level of frustration by outsiders about long sales cycles and decision paths. Whether it's on the part of a candidate/client in a #recruitment process, or of a prospect in a goods/services #sales environment – if you’re dealing with DACH from the outside, you’ve got to prepare for the fact that things just take a little longer. Why is that? #Germans in particular tend to make decisions on a consensus basis. Ahead of committing, they seek agreements from most, if not all, #stakeholders potentially affected by said commitment. The more stakeholders are involved, the longer this consensus takes to be reached. Due diligence also plays a huge part in this process, as you are likely to deal with highly risk-averse people. Again, the more detailed and nuanced these due diligence processes are, the longer the time they will take. Knowing this in advance will help with optimising communication both externally and internally – not least to manage expectations on all sides. How are you approaching DACH? When you have a senior position to fill, do you hire someone with the right experience or promote a proven performer? This is an area I made several mistakes when building the sales team at Zipwhip. Early on, we filled almost all our sales manager positions with internal promotions. Later, we realized we had become too insular and started hiring all our managers from the outside. This led to some of our best employees feeling like there was no room for promotion because we always looked outside the company. Don’t swing from one extreme to the other like I did. Keep a good mix of internal promotions and external hires so that your team sees they have an opportunity for promotion and you get a steady flow of ideas and best practices from outside your organization.
