Pets Corner: Missing Cats Part 2 What to do when your cat goes missing In our last article we looked at why cats get lost and established that most cats can temporarily lose their bearings and become displaced and are likely to be hiding out or trapped, closer than expected. A small proportion of cats may be seriously unhappy in their current home and decide to relocate. In these cases, it is advised you see a behaviourist to suss out and try to remedy whatever is going on in your home that has prompted your cat to go on the run. Sometimes another cat is the culprit! For the displaced cat there are a few key tips that can really help the process of relocation and reuniting with your pet. I moonlight in real estate. Specifically, affordable housing for bluebirds. That’s right. When I’m not WilmerHale’s Pro Bono Counsel, I’m a Bluebird Landlord. This is a photo of my current tenants, Mama and Papa Blue. They moved in last April and have stayed ever since. They are empty nesters now. They had three babies last spring, but as of this week all the kids flew the coop (went off to college?). They haven’t decided yet if they want more Baby Blues. This year they might become snow birds and go south for the winter. But they heard the rent is more expensive in Florida. At the moment, they’re enjoying the empty nest and the daily bowl of free worms subsidized by their landlord (yours truly). I’d say the rent is free too, but it’s not. What they don’t pay in dollars, they pay in joy and beauty (and sometimes free concerts from Papa Blue, who is a singer). They are called “bluebirds of happiness.” They do indeed heal the heart of a Pro Bono Counsel whose day job is often spent confronting the world’s sorrows, trauma, and injustice.
