I am thrilled to share our latest paper entitled "Psychogenic Hyperphagia: Excessive Eating as Stereotypy in a Patient with Catatonia."
Catatonia is a neuropsychiatric disorder that is often overlooked and not treated properly. The current DSM-5-TR
requires 3 out of 12 criteria for diagnosis, including catalepsy, waxy flexibility, stupor, agitation, mutism, negativism, posturing, grimacing, mannerisms, stereotypies, echolalia, and echopraxia. Previous psychiatric literature has mainly focused on simple motor manifestations of mannerisms and stereotypies and used operationalism to recognize these presentations. However, recent reports have identified complex manifestations of stereotypies, such as
psychogenic polydipsia, and have effectively applied treatments used for catatonia, including lorazepam and ECT.
This report describes psychogenic polyphagia as another manifestation of complex stereotypies. It guides recognizing
some of these complex presentations of stereotypies, including using different normative processes, such as the change in the individual's previous self-norm, pattern, and context of the behavior, for assessment and successful treatment.
The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at Penn State College of Medicine and the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute have been at the forefront of improving the recognition and treatment of catatonia, as well as advancing research and conceptualization of this often overlooked condition.
