Does anyone else think there was a distinct lack of social media buzz around the Rugby World Cup? I'm a huge NFL fan, and could easily spend hours online watching in-game clips, highlights, amazing plays and memorable moments from the games. To be honest, you could probably be a "fan" of the NFL just by consuming online content without even watching any of the games. With the Rugby World Cup, however, I genuinely struggled to find any video content from the tournament and a quick search showed that a number of fans were equally baffled / frustrated. For context, the 15 most popular players on social media generated 6.9m engagements, while Swiss superstar Alisha Lehmann alone generated 22.1m engagements at the recent FIFA Women’s World Cup. I know it's a challenge many sports face: the lure of financially rewarding and long-term broadcast deals vs allowing for content to be shared (relatively) freely online, but I can't help but feel that in an age of viral videos and TikTok trends, it's going to be imperative for sports to find the right balance, or seriously risk being irrelevant to millions of people of a certain generation.
