In 2008, the retail industry was a stark landscape for women of color. Women made up 65% of the workforce but only 22% of leadership roles. For women of color — Latinas, Asians, and Blacks combined — the number was less than 1%. This glaring disparity was not just disheartening; it was a call to action. Another amazing session of Black Women in Retail. This session was all about working with Meijers Fairfax Market. Although we already have our products on the shelf there was one big takeaway. Powerful Women in Business…. Take notes and names!

As today is Women's Equality Day let us reflect upon and honor those pioneers who fought for women's rights. And let us not forget that while progress has been made since women won the right to vote 103 years ago, there is still much ground to be won for women's equality. One example of this inequality that struck me recently in this article is how few women are leading retail companies. Out of the 86 retail companies in the Fortune 1000 only 13 have a woman as CEO. That in itself is egregious, but to add insult to injury 72% of retail workers on the front lines - cashiers - are women. This is not equality; far from it.
