Sunny outlook for WHSmith ☀️👀 High street and airport bookseller and stationer WH Smith, which has its headquarters in Swindon, says it is on track to deliver full year trading in line with expectations. In a statement today it said it is well positioned for the peak summer trading period. Its UK travel division saw total revenues up nine per cent in the 13 weeks to June 1 this year. The transformation of the business to a one-stop-shop for travel essentials is delivering strong results, increasing average transaction values and returns. As part of its category development initiatives to expand the breadth and quality of its food-to-go ranges, the retailer recently launched a new food-to-go brand, Smiths Family Kitchen, in more than 300 Travel stores. Revenues are also up in its North American division, up five per cent – on a constant currency basis. Like for Like sales were flat, so the retailer is introducing a range of initiatives including focussing on higher performing categories, increasing snacking and confectionery and the number of chillers in store. Lidl is set to expand its footprint in the UK by opening hundreds of new supermarkets, highlighting the success of the discount grocer. New stores are planned to be opened in areas such as Leeds, Edinburgh and London, with the supermarket also on the hunt for new areas to open larger stores. Those who can identify a suitable location for a supermarket, which has easy access, good traffic/foot flow and over 100 parking spaces have a chance at receiving a finders fee. Should the location be used by Lidl, the finder will receive 1.5% of the total freehold purchase price or 10% of the first year’s rent. If a finder was to find a site bought for £1.5 million, this would result in the finder receiving £22,500. Lidl plans to increase its British estate from 960 stores to 1,100 as part of a wider expansion plan till the end of 2025. I hope you understand my concerns regarding the appointment of Mark Robinson as the chair of the High Street Task Force, given his background in building shopping centres. It is indeed important to have individuals with relevant experience in addressing the challenges faced by high streets and markets. Helen Dickinson OBE, the CEO of the BRC, has also faced criticism due to the closure of numerous businesses during her tenure. however, her last two posts were very good and on point! To effectively tackle the issues plaguing high streets, it is crucial to involve professionals who possess extensive practical experience in these areas. Their knowledge and insights gained from working directly on high streets or markets for a considerable period can be invaluable in finding effective solutions. It is worth noting that we have assembled a team of top experts from diverse fields, and their expertise and input could contribute significantly to the revitalization of the high street. It is unfortunate that our team has not been given the opportunity to assist in this matter. The current leadership, including Mark Robinson and Helen Dickinson OBE, may benefit from considering alternative perspectives and incorporating the expertise of individuals who have a deep understanding of the challenges faced on the high street. however, I truly believe they will not give our team a chance because they would look so inept when we had finished just one high Street which shoppers would flock to to see how it should be done. My emphasis on the importance of tourism, product development, and boosting GDP through increased sales and utilization of domestic products is well-founded. Scotland's adoption of my advice on tourism demonstrates the potential positive impact that such measures can have. Christa and Marcus Binder, visual merchandisers based in Cyprus, possess exceptional skills. Christa's talent was recognized by Karl Lagerfeld, who gave her the opportunity to redesign one of his shops. Their expertise should be considered if logistically feasible and cost-effective. Ultimately, the goal should be to foster collaboration and synergy among all stakeholders involved in revitalizing the high street. #ModernExpo_retailnews Lidl plans to open "hundreds" of new stores across the UK to expand its customer base. The German discount supermarket is looking to expand in Bristol, Birmingham, Berwick, Wandsworth, Fulham, Hoxton, and Canning Town in London over the next few months. Lidl has published a list of desired locations for new sites to increase its presence in cities like Edinburgh, Leeds, and Liverpool, as well as towns including Woking, Wadebridge, Dumfries, and Didcot. This news comes as the grocer marks 30 years in the UK and follows a year of significant infrastructure investment, including opening its largest global warehouse in Luton. Lidl has specified that it is looking for sites in "prominent locations" with "easy access and strong pedestrian or traffic flow." The supermarket chain is seeking unit sizes between 18,000 and 26,500 sq ft and over 100 dedicated car parking spaces.
