DATA DATA DATA A really interesting move by Lidl to connect their loyalty card into EV charging. I'd presume this is mainly driven by the value of overlaying that data on top of their in-store behaviour. Knowing which of your customers have more expensive, more eco-friendly vehicles must be a great proxy for various aspects of a customers' profile. And on top of that, getting a sense on how long they spend in store/the area - and how their behaviour changes following the introduction of such charging stations. As customer data becomes both more valuable in use AND harder to obtain, I'd expect to see more integrations and partnerships like this.

As a regular shopper at Sainsbury's I was happy and sad to discover that they had conducted a refresh of their self service kiosks. Happy - It needed an update visually but also around product discoverability, I found it easier to find my Banana's Sad - The upon checkout it still auto defaults to cash as an option. (In 2023!!) The whole point of these machines is to get a customer through scanning to payment as quick and as easy as possible with limited steps or screen presses. I am no genius but I am sure that card is the most used payment option, why is this not the default? This feels like a easy win and I am sure running A/B tests on this would easily prove my (be it lacking in actual data) Hypothesis that defaulting to card would improve checkout speed. It is not just the websites that should be optimised. If they are not interested in speed then maybe they should be looking at product recommendations? 🤔 Does anyone else have any A/B test ideas or done tests for self service kiosks?

Now this is interesting…whilst other retailers are removing or reducing self scan checkouts, Tesco is doubling down Removing even the need to scan groceries with their ‘magic tills’ Not sure 100% how I feel about this I like the idea in principle, but I’m not sure why they are doing it Those chains reducing self check out are responding to customers telling them they don’t like them - specifically they don’t like it when they don’t work and they are stuck waiting for help Now, looking at what Tesco are doing I’m not sure it’s going to help that The small print says you have to check your bill carefully before paying to make sure it has correctly added the right stuff This feels like more faff to me than scanning my own stuff and in the early days you know it’s going to have issues So you see I’m not sure if this is going to add to the customer experience or not How do you guys feel about this? https://lnkd.in/ehaeyjMF

Check out this post from Toby Pickard. He tested Tesco’s scan-free self checkout. It makes use of the GetGo system which Tesco tested at Holborn in London, but without the need of an app or creditcard to enter the store. (Which was a huge barrier). How it works: you grab your groceries and just pay at the self checkout. No need for scanning. The system knows what you picked. No more mistakes at scanning or indeed : no more theft by not scanning on purpose.. Nice! Great when innovations are combined for a better outcome for users and retailer in this case.
