I'm sorry, but I don't share Tesco's enthusiasm about dragging a giant plastic tube around the ocean and over the seabed to catch fish. This plastic trawl gear is a re-branding of precision seafood harvest (spoiler alert, it's not very precise). As a New Zealand taxpayer, we have already involuntary contributed $24 million to this questionable project. According to NZ government bycatch data, this plastic-tube variant of trawling actually causes more coral bycatch than regular trawl nets in the fisheries it's been trialed (hoki and inshore trawling). We need to be more aspirational in addressing the impacts of bottom trawling than simply trawling with a giant plastic tube instead of a net. There are much better ways to catch fish than trawling of any sort... How about supporting real change, like getting bottom trawling off seamounts (New Zealand is the last country still trawling seamounts in the South Pacific high seas), and shifting to non-trawl gears instead? We can do better than trawling with a giant plastic tube. The ocean needs us to do better than that. https://lnkd.in/expKUA84

Simplot Company’s John West brand and Pacifical. Henk Brus, Pacifical CEO, stated, “Through our real-time platform, we have facilitated the smooth transmission of verified critical tracking events, ensuring 100% compliance with GDST protocols and data #interoperability across systems.The successful beta testing phase of SmarTuna demonstrates our commitment to excellence in traceability.” The beta testing phase saw the transmission of 105 critical tracking events—covering fishing, transshipment, discharge, and processing—via Pacifical’s #SmarTuna platform to John West’s “Trace Our Tuna” site. “Leading the GDST initiative as part of our long-term collaboration with Pacifical is a logical and beneficial next step in our pioneering approach to sustainability, and we are proud to be part of this pivotal moment in the seafood industry." said Phoebe Dowling, head of Simplot Global Food sustainability.
