This is a significant development for the Limpopo Basin and the entire Southern African region. As extreme weather events and especially prolonged droughts continue to have a huge impact on Africa's vulnerable river systems regional cooperation and leadership will be crucial WhyAfrica #watermanagement

African governments play a pivotal leadership role in creating an environment that enables investment in water security and climate-resilient sanitation. This is why it is significant that ministers responsible for #water from the Republics of Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and South Africa have recommitted their support to transboundary cooperation in the Limpopo River Basin. Yesterday, the ministers signed the Amendment to the Limpopo Watercourse Commission (LIMCOM) Agreement which will foster closer cooperation for judicious, sustainable and coordinated management of the shared watercourses in line with the SADC Secretariat Protocol on Shared Watercourses. The ministers also launched the $6mn Integrated Transboundary River Basin Management for the Sustainable Development of the Limpopo River Basin, implemented in partnership with the Global Water Partnership Southern Africa (also the host of the AIP secretariat), with support from UNDP, through the Global Environment Facility International Waters Program. The AIP welcomes the leadership of these four countries in creating an enabling environment for water governance - which will ultimately improve the region's capacity to access finance investments in water, sanitation and environmental protection.
