They go beyond compliance, sourcing ethically produced wood from Peru that’s traceable right back to the tree. This not only secures their supply chain but profoundly supports both local ecosystems and communities. ✅ Why This Matters: On April 24, the European Parliament approved the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, moving it one step closer to formal adoption by the European Union. The CSDDD creates a legal liability for companies relating to environmental and human rights violations within their supply chain. In Germany, similar regulations are in place, demanding transparency and accountability from companies in their supply chain processes, starting 2023. ✅ Now your turn! While it may seem that the current generation is more focused on environmental issues than previous ones due to increased awareness and advocacy, I beg to differ as well. The paradoxical behavior of many individuals within this generation, such as participating in environmental protests while leaving a trail of waste at events or engaging in viral challenges that disrupt public spaces, reflects a concerning disconnect between their stated values and actions. Despite a growing emphasis on sustainability and eco-consciousness in mainstream discourse, the prevalence of these contradictory behaviors suggests that there is still much work to be done in fostering genuine environmental stewardship among young people today. oceanintegrity.org

As a mother, grandmother, environmental journalist, activist, and former teacher, I believe it is important to educate and inspire the young in finding solutions to the massive and growing plastic pollution problem in our waterways. It is the children who will inherit the problem if we do not act now. Is this our industry's 'Year of the Dragon' – one of power, strength and good fortune? Will we see the adoption of UK policy reforms focussed on the collection and recycling of materials, allowing us to shift focus to resource minimisation, reuse, and enabling the circular economy? Are consumers ready to receive messages on simpler recycling, DRS and EPR, and change their behaviour accordingly? Are manufacturers, importers, and local authorities ready to navigate and implement the new policy requirements? Yes, we also have a General Election looming! Let's hope the UK parties will recognise the importance of environmental actions in improving quality of life and creating more resilient communities. All the while, at Resource Futures, we will continue to collaborate and innovate, and provide the evidence to inform policy, support waste strategy and services, implement community action and change behaviour.
