Researchers assert that a high-quality curriculum can increase teaching quality. Here’s the challenge: Less than half of educators report that their principal encourages them to use the recommended or required curriculum. This may feel like cause for panic. But there are two big reasons for hope: 🌟 High-quality instructional materials have never been more available, affordable, or adaptable. 🌟 At least 13 states have created mandates, supports, and strong incentives for districts to implement quality curricula. Ready to build support that scales? We can help. https://hubs.la/Q02Gqw-Q0

The distinction between the prescribing and descriptive models of curriculum is quite important in educational theory and practice. ☆Prescribing Model: This model is more about the ideal or intended curriculum. It outlines the goals, content, and methods that curriculum designers believe should be included in the educational program. It’s like a blueprint for what education should look like. ☆Descriptive Model: This model, on the other hand, focuses on the actual curriculum that is implemented and experienced by students. It describes the real-world application of the curriculum, including what is taught, how it is taught, and how it is assessed.

I really enjoyed presenting at the Historical Association conference with Geraint Brown on building a high quality history curriculum. We introduced four key curriculum elements with a series of questions. The questions are designed to prompt consideration of the robustness of a curriculum: 🔬 Scope - Is the curriculum ambitious in breadth and depth? Is it thorough and rich? 🔢 Sequence - Is content sequenced in a way that builds on and links to prior learning? How does it provide access to future learning? 🛣 Coherence - How is the narrative journey woven over time? Do substantive & disciplinary concepts resonate & develop? 🧠 Rigour - What is the history-specific rationale? Is attention paid to progress in substantive and disciplinary knowledge? Whilst these questions are history-specific, consideration of these four curriculum elements is key to constructing a high-quality curriculum in any subject. In the session we offered practical examples and pragmatic advice to support teachers to consider how these curriculum elements are manifested in a curriculum. We've written a short blog, which draws on some of the material from the session. The piece provides practical help to guide a curriculum review process. We hope it's helpful! https://lnkd.in/eReapVY3

In my role developing lesson plans for educators, I've been delving into diverse learning activities and instructional approaches. The book "NeuroTeach" emphasizes the importance of varying teaching methods and assessments based on content and timing. This guiding principle has inspired me to step outside my usual strategies while ensuring they remain rooted in educational theory. Remember, students thrive on variety in learning, and educators must have access to a collection of activities to cater to all learners effectively. #Education #LearningActivities #InstructionalApproaches #transitioningteacher #curriculum
