Amy Lewin picks up an important point here, even if I'm not sure that this is exactly the right framing. The question of how many new funds are needed is irrelevant (although, for the record, I do believe there is more needed). The market will sort itself out and it is brutal atm. If you're not someone who comes from real wealth or who has genuine and deep access to wealthy circles, your chances of raising a first-time VC funds in Europe are pretty slim at the moment. The European institutional LP ecosystem for sub $50 million emerging funds is terribly underdeveloped and has been in a de-facto hibernation mode for the last 18 months. There's a lot of chatter, self marketing, virtue signaling and talk about the need for diversity, but you can count LPs who are able to truly anchor a small fund on one hand (or less). Partly because LPs with such strategy don't exist, partly because the few who tried similar strategies are mostly out of money (and maybe they are just opaque about it). The situation reminds me of the VC market in Europe 15 years ago when Seedcamp got started. This is a generational opportunity to start a conviction driven FoF targeting first time funds in Europe and willing to take 30-50% exposure in each fund. You just need $100M and not be sheep.
