World Photo Day is on August 19 and it celebrates the day when the French government purchased the patent for the daguerreotype process. The daguerreotype process is a photographic process that creates highly detailed images on a sheet of copper plate with a thin coat of silver. The day requires participants to share a photo of their world, which can be anything the photographer chooses. The definition of photography is quite literally “drawing the light” and British scientist Sir John Herschel came up with it in 1839. He used the Greek word phōtós, which means “light” and graphê which means “drawing or writing”. How to Celebrate? Whether you are an amateur, a professional, or someone who spends most of his or her day taking phone pictures and sharing them with your social media followers, #WorldPhotographyDay is an easy holiday to celebrate. Here are some ways you can enjoy this day: * Learn and read more about the history and science behind photography. * If you have always wanted to learn photography, maybe today is the time to start taking lessons. * If you are a photographer, why not volunteer your time to teach your craft and trade to others? #Photography #CaptureLife #CaptureMoments Check out the Awareness Days Calendar on aDoddle.org - Discover what's coming up in the next few months and at the same time why not search the Community Map to find amazing charities and community groups in your local area 🙂 https://lnkd.in/eB8dKfQE #Community #Charity #Awareness #CommunityMap 🗺️ #AwarenessDays

9-years-ago today I went on my first Safari in South Africa. This was before I started my nonprofit, WorldPix, which sells photographs to raise money for charities in Africa and around the world. This was also before I started a two year program from the New York Institute of Photography to increase my skills. I loved photography and had a pretty good eye, but needed a ton of help to capture what I was seeing. On my first day in the vehicle I told the photographic guide that I was really disappointed that we had complete cloud cover with no sunlight to be seen. I thought “good lighting” was the key to good photographs? The wise photographer immediately began to teach me that direct sunlight is not actually good lighting and about why the lighting on this day would be perfect to highlight the expressions of the animals faces if we could get close enough. The white out clouds would act as a sort of “soft box” to perfectly light the models (animals) faces from all directions softly and evenly. I would learn more about this idea later in my photographic studies. Based on this advice we changed our strategy from capturing the animals in their environment to getting as close as we could and creating portrait images - almost like a model shoot! As luck would have it, a few minutes after this important lesson we came upon a majestic Lion and captured this photo, which is still one of my favorite lion shots because of the incredible details in the face. I learned a lot of lessons on my first trip to Africa. One of these lessons was the importance of good mentors that can see the opportunity for success in the midst of difficult circumstances. Have you had mentors that have helped you see the opportunity behind the problem? #photography #africa #lions #mentors

BUMPs tip of the week: Choose imagery wisely People remember 80% of what they see, 20% of what they read and 10% of what they hear. This is one of the many reasons why choosing the right imagery is so important. A good photo evokes emotion and can convey a message that goes well beyond words but be sure you have the rights to use the images. Some ways to safely source imagery: - pay for stock photos - find free stock imagery with the proper rights - create your own images - commission your own photography Connect with BUMP today to learn more! 📲 https://lnkd.in/eSScUVCa #tipoftheweek #howto #raffle #fundraising

"Have you ever heard of the concept of “Majority World”? Coined by Bangladeshi photographer Shahidul Alam (https://lnkd.in/gY53es9h), it refers to the fact that people belonging to contexts called “developing” or “Third World” are, well, exactly that: the majority of the world’s population.” - Miša Krenčeyová, Fairpicture Credit: Mauro Vombe/ HelpAge / Fairpicture #Fairpicture #VisualStorytelling #ImpactfulPhotography #EthicalJournalism #Sustainability #Nonprofits #NGOs #CorporateResponsibility #EthicalStorytelling #CommunityStorytelling #FairContentProduction #ImpactDriven #Photography #RepresentationMatters #Storytelling #EthicalFundraising #EthicalVisualCommunication #VideoProduction #PhotoProduction #FreelancePhotographer #Dignity
