Ecosystems that are highly competitive at engaging in commerce at the level of international business have a wide array of assets that enable them to attract and retain global companies and facilitate the expansion of domestic companies into foreign markets. They also attract international business travelers, tourists, and students. Layers of attributes and capabilities combine to make an ecosystem highly competitive for international engagement. Well-developed infrastructure and trade infrastructure, access to resilient upstream and downstream supply chains, access to business talent and skilled workforce, and access to capital are all crucial. Strategic economic development initiatives are vital. Proximity to institutions of higher education, tech hubs, accelerators, and industry clusters can also be important for innovation research and development, partnership development, and market access. Attributes that may not be as obvious as components of a business ecosystem but that nonetheless contribute significantly to its ability to attract, retain, and grow international business include having a thriving international arts, culture, and food scene, having a tourism industry that is well-equipped to serve and interest travelers from around the world, and being globally recognized for sports and entertainment. Assets such as those mentioned here encourage local businesses to become involved in trade and support them as they grow their capacity. They attract international travelers and students; and they support cultural diplomacy. Moreover, they help to generate international investments in the forms of opening new offices, distribution facilities, manufacturing operations, and collaborative projects. The International Division of the Kansas Department of Commerce has strong, established subdivisions specializing in International Investment and Export Promotion. Global Resources is the innovative new subdivision launched to create resources that broadly bolster the international business ecosystem in Kansas and make it one of the most competitive in the country. The past six months have been some of the most intense of my professional life. The picture below is from a trip to Hong Kong, one of many international journeys. Despite what the photo might suggest, it has been incredibly busy and intense, yet also fun and rewarding. How to strengthen the competitiveness of the #Pomeranian Voivodeship and the companies investing here? American companies presented their postulates in #Sopot regarding support for the region's development AmCham has prepared a list of business postulates that are presented to candidates for the Sejm and Senate of the Republic of Poland. One of these meetings took place on September 14, at the Sheraton Sopot Hotel hotel. At the invitation of AmCham Branch Gdańsk, representatives of American companies with headquarters in the region met with the candidate for the Sejm, and the Mayor of Sopot, dr Jacek Karnowski. The main topics included immigration policy and labor law, legal stability, energy and offshore as opportunities for the economic development of the region and support for investing in renewable energy sources by providing connection capacity. According to American investors, the implementation of these demands is crucial for the further development of Pomerania. One of the most important needs of business is to focus on the Pomeranian Voivodeship as a place for investments, innovations and the creation of HUBTech. The issue of supporting the development of local transport and access to housing for young employees is currently becoming a huge challenge for companies in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, especially in the aspect of acquiring talent for work. Additionally, companies unanimously call for the development of an education strategy supporting the development of such things as entrepreneurship, product management and teamwork. It is worth adding that as part of the Education project, under the patronage of AmCham, American companies have already established cooperation aimed at building relationships with universities and secondary schools in this area. Jacek Karnowski considered demands related to education, eliminating transport exclusion and the development of renewable energy sources to be particularly important. Young businesses succeed in international markets through trial and error – success does not always have to be based on careful planning, goal setting or large resources.   As the growth of large companies fades and there are not enough successful medium-sized companies in Finland, attention is turning to young Finnish companies that are looking to international markets for growth from the start. However, the challenge of internationalisation for these companies is their newness, small size, and unfamiliarity with international markets. Last week, I was dumbfounded by a blind spot caused by my own myopic perspective on international business and got a healthy reminder that learning never stops. Despite having owned and operated businesses in both Denmark and the U.S., I've never focused on giving advise on doing business in Denmark. For years, I've been guiding Danish business owners on establishing themselves in the U.S. and sharing insights about America's diverse culture to prepare Danes for business opportunities in the States. However, during a recent dialogue with an American business owner whose insights I value greatly, I was struck by a gap in my own perception. Curious about American investments in Danish businesses, and why we don't see more investments, despite the risk-willing capital in the U.S. I asked him about his perspective. His response was quick and enlightening: "I think the main issue is that American investors and companies might not fully understand or feel at ease with the way business is done in Denmark." While American capital is often risk-willing, it should not be mistaken for a willingness to take risks without thorough understanding. Fortunately, #investinaalborg allowed me to join their ambassador corps a couple of years ago and this has given me access to a wealth of experts and materials, enhancing my ability to bridge these gaps effectively. This "revelation" has intensified my dedication to fostering better mutual comprehension between American and Danish business cultures. In January 2022, a Statement of Mutual Cooperation was signed between the Texas Economic Development Office of the Governor, Greg Abbott USA, and the Bureau of Industrial and Labor Affairs, Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Japan, together with 19 Texas communities as collaborative partners - known as the Inter-regional Economic Exchange Program. The Mission of the Inter-regional Economic Exchange Program is to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) expand into each country’s market, promote innovation through collaboration and joint research, and facilitate the creation of jobs through direct investment. (In Japan, for example, small and medium size enterprises (SME’s) comprise approximately 99.7% of all businesses and employ 70% of the country’s workforce.) HOWORTH International, LLC is proud to have been selected again to support and advise on this Inter-regional Economic Exchange Program in its 3rd year. In the past 2 years, Japanese companies have come from various market sectors and included a wide range of service, manufacturing and technology businesses. On Thursday, July 25/24, we launched the 2024/2025 Program with an informational webinar where, together with several other support professionals, we presented to over 83 Japanese SME applicants to the Program.
