🔋 This is a recommendation for my German-speaking audience. In a recent episode of the Geladen - der Batteriepodcast, Prof. Dr. Maximilian Fichtner (leading researcher at POLiS - Cluster of Excellence, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the Ulm University) and Dr. Joachim Sann (University of Giessen, Center for Materials Research) discussed the revolutionary progress made by Sakuu in the field of #batterytechnology. #Sakuu has unveiled a 354 Wh/kg #lithiummetalcell that is causing a lot of attention and discussion in the battery community. This cell is unique because it eliminates traditional metal conductors such as copper and aluminum, branding it as a "metal-free" cell. In addition, the company uses a dry coating process for the electrodes, a significant departure from traditional wet coating methods. This innovation aims to reduce CO2 emissions and energy consumption. In this context, Professors Fichtner and Dr. Sann provided their expert analysis of Sakuu's innovations. While expressing cautious optimism, they emphasized the need for independent testing to verify these claims. If successful, #Sakuu's innovations could lead to more affordable and efficient solid-state batteries, which would have a significant impact on the battery industry and the viability of electric vehicles. 🔋 #BatteryTechnology Updates: Something for my German-speaking audience. Today, I would like to highlight an interview for Geladen - der Batteriepodcast from leading #batteryresearch institutions in #Germany. The interview: https://lnkd.in/eSAH5csU In summary: #Siliconanodes are a hot topic in battery research, promising higher energy densities and longer ranges for electric vehicles. Dr. Marcel Neubert, founder and CTO of the startup company NorcSi GmbH, discusses their method for making high-performance anodes from pure silicon. Silicon anodes could potentially double the #energydensity by weight and volume compared to #graphiteanodes, and allow for much faster charging. The main challenge with silicon anodes is volume expansion during charging, which can cause the material to degrade. Current approaches involve creating nanostructures to accommodate the expansion, but this leads to other problems such as increased surface area and lithium loss. #NorcSi's approach uses a simple silicon layer on copper foil, then applies an ultra-short heating step with flash lamps to create a stable structure. This method avoids complex nanostructures and results in a smoother surface, reducing initial lithium loss and improving stability. The process is potentially much simpler and less expensive than other silicon anode manufacturing methods. Current laboratory cells achieve over 300 cycles with 80% capacity retention, but further development is needed to increase cycle life. The company is in discussions with major battery manufacturers and believes that commercial production could be possible within 2-3 years, depending on investment and partnerships.
