In the final installment of our series profiling SSRC's new Criminal Justice Innovation Fellows, we spoke with Zachary Porreca, a postdoctoral fellow in the CLEAN unit at Università Bocconi in Milan, Italy, where he studies the economics of crime. As part of the new SSRC fellowship, Porreca plans to undertake several projects. Specifically, he'll study peer networks within state #prison systems, and how they predict a person’s peer networks in other facilities as they move through #prisonsystems as they serve their sentence. Separately, he plans to study the #labormarket impacts of programs that offer insurance policies to people who have recently been convicted of a crime, and whether that makes employers more likely to hire them. Love this explanation of how we should be approaching probation and the rehabilitation of people who have offended. Prof McNeil is an academic now but he was a frontline drug recovery worker and criminal social worker first, so his insights are both intellectually rigorous and rooted in the reality of what does and doesn't work on the ground. How does it land with you? #prison #probation #reintegration #rehabilitation

Social entrepreneur. Business Development Executive leader. Bridge Builder. Workforce Development Ecosystems Architect.
One can’t deny the need to validate one’s work with qualitative and quantitative data methods. If you feel like the work you’re doing is working, let research prove it out. It often takes courage to lay your work so bare, however, the results will often improve your outcomes by pointing out where you can make modifications. Here’s a lengthy Harvard study on the work I was involved with in Delaware. Opening doors that had previously never been opened. https://lnkd.in/e5JU7rW

Attending (virtually) the 2023 PRIM&R Conference (https://primr.org/), being held this week in Washington, D.C. (December 3-6). Among the sessions I am looking forward to tomorrow (Tuesday, December 5) include: --"Research or Not? Applying the Common Rule 'Carve‐Outs.'" The session looks at four types of research activities that are not reviewable by IRBs, asking the question, "What should HRPP professionals understand about these types of activities and how they relate to human research protections?" Case studies will be presented for discussion. --"Finding Our True North: Informed Consent as the Moral Compass in the SBER Seas." "...presenters will delve into the principles and practices that make informed consent a cornerstone of ethical research. Furthermore, we'll discuss how IRBs can encourage the informed consent process as a means to initiate a meaningful and ethical relationship with research participants." Case studies will be presented for discussion. #PRIMR23 #PRIMRConference #ResearchEthics #ResearchOversightCommunity #ResponsibleResearch

Senior Legal Officer, Department of Justice & Attorney-General Qld | Adjunct Research Fellow, UQ School of Law
Introducing, Dr Kendall! So excited to share that this week I was awarded my PhD 🎓 I’ve had a wonderful few years, honing my research skills, meeting fabulous people, and learning how I can ensure that my research has impact. There are so many people who have helped me along the way and without which I wouldn’t be where I am today. In particular, I want to express my deepest gratitude to my supervisors and mentors, Professor Heather Douglas, Associate Professor Robin Fitzgerald, Dr Caitlin Goss and Associate Professor Rebecca Ananian-Welsh. For those who are interested, my thesis examined the extent to which the non-fatal strangulation trial in Queensland is informed by victim brain injury and PTSD. I found that such trials are only informed by victim brain injury and PTSD to some extent. As part of my project, I also developed a conceptual framework for the ‘trauma-informed trial’. This framework is intended to be used as a tool by law and policy-makers, law reformers, academics and others to assess the extent to which criminal trial measures (both existing and proposed) are trauma-informed. As I continue my journey beyond this milestone, I want to use the skills and expertise that I gained during my PhD to create meaningful change in the law. #PhD #research #law
