Like many of you I suspect, I was delighted to see the BBC focus 'Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg' on the politics of #climatechange this week. Bringing together Chris Stark as he leaves the Climate Change Committee, MPs from all 3 main parties and influential voices on both sides of the debate, it was bound to be an interesting watch. Sure there was inevitable political posturing and point scoring: that's unlikely to change with a general election on the horizon. But there was a lot of important and sensible debate. Within all that, there were three reflections I took away: 1. It took a long time for subject of #adaptation to come up. We are - rightly - focussed on reducing our reliance on #fossilfuels and greening our energy supplies, manufacturing and travel. But all of that #investment, as well as our existing #infrastructure and way of life, is at risk right now from the impacts already happening. We've seen that in the UK this winter, we saw that in Dubai last week and we've seen it across the global south as temperatures have soared over their summer. If we don't invest in #naturebasedsolutions now, we will cost ourselves more in the long-run and potentially hamper our ability to invest in #netzero. We have to make this message more mainstream. 2. Chris Packham was asked about the impact of #climateprotests and his answer was, in my view, spot on. He said (and I paraphrase) that the issue is the message is often missed because of the focus on its method of delivery. He recognised that different people resonate with, and want to support, different methods of delivery - even if there is commonality around their message. And he talked about needing different options to reach different people. Understanding and respecting this feels critical if we're to come together to achieve that common goal of #climateresilience. 3. Luke Johnson challenged the evidence around climate impacts. Even now it renders me speechless, which is probably better than me voicing my inner reaction, when this happens. But Layla Moran MP had the perfect answer: she talked about the positives for the #economy and #skills that come from focussing on new #green #technology even if climate science were wrong (though her tone implied she doesn't believe it is). Which reminded me of something I've said before and which resonates with my second reflection: we need to tailor our message to our audience. Nature based solutions have multiple benefits. Which of those benefits matter most to the audiences we seek to influence differs. And starting the conversation from the point of view of the ones that matter most to us rarely works. Now, more than ever, we need to understand others' perspective and drivers, talk their language, and help solve their issues. If you weren't glued to the programme, it's worth a watch! https://lnkd.in/esCzpbGh

👩🏫 A consumer should not need a degree in climate science to understand the true environmental impact of a product. Therefore it is great to see the UK's Green Claims Code being used to encourage practical, industry-specific action today (more details in comments). Companies can avoid the stress of (un)intentional greenwashing by building their climate strategy on: 🔦 Transparency, 📊 Scientifically credible, data-backed claims, ↘ Crucially, following through on real actions that significantly reduce their climate impact today. For assistance building your climate strategy, get in touch with me or find more information at https://normative.io/ #sustainability #greenclaimscode #climateaction #greenwashing #carbonaccounting
