My contribution to The Psychologist this month outlining how commissioning can be more participatory & responsible. Especially in considering and addressing situations at the intersection between inequality and climate change. "We need to consider those who are more vulnerable to the impact of climate change, but who also have the least control" Full issue is here: https://lnkd.in/euYkBpC3

C-Change Conversations is celebrating 10 years of climate education and action! And what a decade it has been. From our initial small discussion group with Jigar Shah in my living room to presentations to 19,000 people with 228 events in 32 states and across the world via Zoom, we have helped those “not in the choir” understand how climate change will impact them personally and why they should care. When we started in 2014, few groups were educating on climate change. It was considered a “ratings killer” for much of the media and “taboo” even for some environmental groups that feared they would lose supporters for their core mission if they broached the topic. That’s changed – today there are many very successful organizations educating on climate change. But our approach – talking to those who still have doubts or dismiss it as sensationalized or a liberal cause – is still vitally important. We help position this issue as a human one, and invite everyone to be part of the solution. Those 10 years went by in the blink of an eye. There’s still so much work to do, but today we want to take a moment to be grateful for all of the people who have supported us and who have carried the conversation forward, and to celebrate how far we’ve come. You can read up on our most recent work in our new quarterly newsletter: https://lnkd.in/eYYVWBij #CChangeConversations #climatechange #globalwarming #carbonemissions #netzero #climateaction #cleantech #cleanenergy

In the early 80s, mum spoke up about the hole in the ozone layer. She would attend events with my dad in the mining and mineral industry. Her views were unpopular, challenging their fundamental intentions. She was met with disrespect, immaturity and defence. ‘’Green Jean’’ they would call her. Inside, Mum embraced her greenie identity. She was proud. She understood ecosystems and interconnectedness. But still, words hurt. She appreciated mining as complex, that it lifted quality of lives. Humans need stuff, gadgets and electricity. But she questioned the true impact, how much, and for how long? Back then, how one felt about global warming was kept private. Feelings were viewed as soft, weak. One was expected to manage them, hide them, minimize them. It wasn’t yet understood that feelings are powerful, public and shared. It wasn’t yet understood that emotional health requires community. There were no mainstream spaces to share feelings about the environmental destruction, about global warming. No Climate Cafés, no articles on eco-anxiety, no acknowledgement of the legitimacy of climate or earth emotions - that is, how we feel about the world around us, the extermination of landscapes and animals, the culture of hyperconsumption. These days, we have a name for ‘’green jean’’ behavior: ‘’Greenhouse Gaslighting’’. In her journal article, Blanche Verlie explored this (and more) saying: 𝘉𝘺 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦'𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘶𝘳𝘵, 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘨𝘢𝘴𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘬𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘭 𝘧𝘶𝘦𝘭 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘴 𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘸𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳-𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 Mum's advocacy has had an intergenerational impact - through myself and siblings, and more recently, my seven year olds who joined the ''green team'' at school. Bit by bit, we transform ourselves in relation to one another. Through our work Psychology for a Safe Climate we offer programs to support people to face the climate reality. This work is still too niche, and we need to bring it to wider audiences. 🚨 Long Post Alert 🚨 I’m not sure about you all, but I’m tired. I’m tired of being bombarded with images of people suffering and not seeing change. I’m tired of watching systems that need to be dismantled garner more power than ever before. And I’m tired of trying to convince people that, despite politics, people are owed fundamental human rights. While open discourse is undoubtedly important, we need less talk and more action. Many of us have genuine intentions to do good and drive meaningful change, yet the tangible outcomes, more often than not, fall short. So, I did something about it. I’ve shifted my focus from merely talking about the issues to actively addressing them because, simply, humanity cannot afford to wait any longer. I’m proud to launch The Dweller Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization focused on tackling some of the most critical issues facing humanity today and laying the groundwork for a better tomorrow. Dweller’s mission has people at the center, and initiatives are rooted in providing humanitarian aid to those affected by conflict and natural disaster, supporting and rehabilitating the unhoused, offering educational scholarships to usher in the next wave of leaders, taking on climate change through sustainable farming initiatives, combating food insecurity, and using the fruits of the earth for healing and pain management. I believe in the power of collective action and the profound impact we can make when we come together. Here’s how you can help: ▪ Donate: Your contributions directly support our initiatives, providing immediate relief and long-term solutions to those in need. ▪ Volunteer: Join our team of dedicated volunteers and be the change you wish to see in the world. Your time and skills are invaluable to our mission. ▪ Spread the Word: Share our story and help us reach more people. Together, we can amplify our impact and drive meaningful change. ▪ Collaborate: If you’re an organization or individual passionate about any of our focus areas, we would love to partner with you. Collaboration is vital to broadening our reach and effectiveness. Our journey has just begun, and we are committed to making a lasting difference. Let’s work together to create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Check us out at dwellerfoundation.org. #TheDwellerFoundation #philanthropy #consciousleadership #sustainability

A very interesting article in #TheConversation about bushfire emissions. "...research sugests we cannot assume forests will recover quickly after bushfires. As bushfires become more frequent and intense, they are more likely to irrevocably change landscapes. Bushfires are also more likely to occur in areas that are not adapted to fire and recover poorly – such as Tasmania’s World Heritage-listed northwest." This has major implications for Australia’s emissions accounting. Based on this article, we are very sophisticated in our accounting for bushfires, but we need to do more. #foodforthought In a dangerously warming world, we must confront the grim reality of Australia’s bushfire emissions (https://lnkd.in/gEdCmJCM)

On February 10th I'm taking the Polar Bear Plunge to Keep Winter Cold! And need your help to raise my fundraising goal of $1,800. I am taking the plunge to support my team’s incredible work at the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN). CCAN is the first grassroots, nonprofit organization dedicated exclusively to fighting global warming in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Our mission is to build a diverse movement powerful enough to put our region on the path to climate stability, while using our proximity to the nation’s capital to inspire action in neighboring states, regions nationwide, and countries around the world. What did we accomplish this past year? In Virginia our sister organization, CCAN Action Fund, went all in to help elect climate champions to the state legislature and won big. Many of the House candidates we endorsed won in real nail biter elections, and our mobilization helped get them over the top to victory. In Maryland CCAN Action Fund led the campaign to pass an innovative offshore wind policy, which has already brought new union manufacturing jobs to Baltimore. In DC we are blocking Project Pipes, a proposal by utilities to force ratepayers to spend $4.5 billion on new gas infrastructure. On December 19th the DC Public Service Commission decided to delay the second round of Project Pipes At the national level, we led a mobilization that helped pressure the EPA to issue more pollution slashing regulations. In 2024 we have an even more ambitious agenda and the stakes are even higher. Will you give to my polar bear plunge again this year? Anything you can give will be tremendously helpful. https://lnkd.in/esVtmvr6

What a treat to be able to hear David Cooperrider speak tonight with PNODN on how OD practitioners can make big change in the climate space. His work and challenge ... "All over the world, we are witnessing the potential of what leading economists are calling 'mission economics.' Today’s emerging mission or purpose economy is, by far, the world’s largest universal change project ever. To end the climate crises in less than a generation while creating a future of 'full-spectrum flourishing' requires more than moonshot thinking or bold policies and breakthroughs in technology." I highly recommend PNODN: https://www.pnodn.org/ #OD #organizationdevelopment #cooperrider #climate

Coral reefs -- the rainforests of the seas -- are dying at a rapid rate as oceans heat up to unprecedented levels. That spells trouble for humanity. We depend on coral reefs for food, medicines, flood control, and income. What can we do? How can we prepare for the changes ahead? Join us on Zoom tomorrow, May 22, at 7:30 pm EDT when C-Change Conversations founder Kathleen Biggins talks with James Porter, PhD, marine biologist and maker of the award-winning film "Chasing Coral." Dr. Porter will share his insights on the impact of climate change on coral and what we need to do to help turn this tide. Dr. Porter will take questions after the interview. Register for the event: https://lnkd.in/eyF7XhuN If you haven’t seen “Chasing Coral,” you can watch it here: https://lnkd.in/eKjcHwFk #CChangeConversations #ChasingCoral #coralreef #coralbleaching #oceantemperatures #climatechange #globalwarming #fossilfuels #carbonemissions #netzero #climateaction #cleantech #cleanenergy #energytransition #renewables
