Nearly 20% of the US population is of Hispanic heritage.* Meanwhile, only about 1.5% of technology startups have one Hispanic founder. As an American tech founder with Mexican roots, I’ve always kept this mismatch in the back of my mind. And I’ve always wondered: is there anything I can do — no matter how small — to inspire the next generation of Hispanic American entrepreneurs in technology? A few years ago, I started highlighting the Hispanic experience in the US during Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept 15th-Oct 15th). This year, I wanted to push harder to help elevate the personal stories from some truly inspirational leaders and visionaries. After discussing a few ideas with family and friends, I landed on the concept of an almanac — a collection of personal stories, statistics and numbers, and tidbits of the collective wisdom from the US Hispanic founder community. I started interviewing founders about their backgrounds and gathering data via a short survey. What was their childhood like? Where did they grow up? What makes them tick? How much capital have they raised? It has been an incredible and inspiring experience to speak to founders who have faced adversity to pursue their dreams in technology. One was smuggled into this country in a secret compartment of a car, another worked in the fields to help their families make ends meet, another was an airplane mechanic to help their family buy their first home. In sharing these stories, I hope to help raise awareness of our community’s massive and growing impact — together, Hispanic founders have raised billions of dollars in capital, created tens of thousands of jobs in the US, and are reaching millions of consumers worldwide. In the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing some of these stories — we’ll also be publishing the Almanac. If you’d like to participate, please let me know. Or if you’re a Hispanic founder who hasn’t filled out the survey, please let me know and I will send you the link. See you soon! *The term Hispanic is fraught, but given that I’m going to speak about Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re going to stick with the term.

Covering U.S. Latinos across business & startups a dose of culture and impact via the Comprende Newsletter | Suma Wealth Creative Consultant | Elevate Latinos (LDC) Consultant
When people ask me why I started Minority Majority, I point to the undeniable: The significant yet often underrepresented contributions of the Latino community to the United States. A closer look at the data reveals the magnitude of this impact: - In 2021, the total economic output (GDP) of US Latinos reached $3.2 trillion, indicating our community's substantial contribution to the national economy. - If US Latinos were a standalone country, our GDP would rank as the 5th largest globally, illustrating the economic magnitude of our demographic. - From 2010 to 2020, Latinos were responsible for 73% of the growth in US labor force participation, highlighting our essential role in the workforce. - With the US facing its largest aging population, it's noteworthy that 25% of young Americans are Latinos, pointing towards a significant demographic shift. The purpose of Minority Majority is to bring these statistics and their implications to the forefront, fostering a deeper recognition of the Latino community's role in shaping the economic and cultural landscape of the US. My aim to create a platform, through creative storytelling, that not only celebrates Latino achievements but also encourages dialogue, understanding, and empowerment. So, if you'd like to stay informed on the business, culture, and impact of US Latinos make sure to give me a follow and subscribe to our newsletter! -- *Facts sourced from the 2023 LDC Fast Facts Report published by the Latino Donor Collaborative

It's that time of year again... Hispanic Heritage month. But let's be honest, we should be embracing, celebrating and advocating ALL cultures every day of the year, so here's a few fun facts about my community to get us started. 🏆 On contributions: Hispanic and Latino communities have made remarkable contributions to the US, significantly impacting its economy, culture, and society. From civil rights leaders like #CesarChavez and #DoloresHuerta, who championed labor rights, to trailblazers in arts and entertainment like #LinManuelMiranda, their influence is profound and far-reaching. In science and technology, pioneers like #EllenOchoa, the first Hispanic woman in space, have paved the way for future generations. Justice #SoniaSotomayor 's historic appointment to the Supreme Court underscores the vital role of Hispanic leaders in shaping the nation’s legal landscape. Cultural icons like #SelenaQuintanilla, and many others who have brought Hispanic music and culture to mainstream audiences, leaving a lasting legacy. 🧗♂️ On our challenges: Despite these achievements, Hispanic and Latino communities continue to face significant challenges. For starters, mental health is a critical issue, with Hispanic adults being 50% less likely to receive mental health treatment compared to non-Hispanic whites. Alarmingly, suicide attempts among Hispanic girls in grades 9-12 are 30% higher than their non-Hispanic white peers. Not to mention the economic disparities, healthcare access, educational barriers, discrimination, and complex immigration issues. Organizations like UnidosUS (@WeAreUnidosUS), LULAC UTD, Hispanic Federation, and MALDEF - Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund to name just a few are at the forefront of advocating for equity and addressing these challenges so learn and support where you can! 🌎 On our impact: The economic impact of Hispanic and Latino populations is substantial, and well talked about. With a spending power of over $1.2 trillion and contributions of approximately $3.2 trillion to the U.S. GDP, our role in driving economic growth is undeniable. Hispanic Americans also have the highest rate of entrepreneurship among any racial or ethnic group, with their businesses growing significantly faster than the national average (we call this grit and resilience, albeit it’s not without challenges). As the Hispanic population continues to grow, their influence on the labor force and overall economic landscape will only increase. 🤝 On being an ally: To be better allies, you can educate yourselves about Hispanic history and culture, listen to and amplify Hispanic voices, advocate for equity, and inclusion with your privilege. By taking these steps, we can help create a more inclusive and supportive environment for Hispanic and Latino communities. (Just a thought, we can do this for ALL underserved/marginalized communities actually) #HispanicHeritageMonth #Diversity #Inclusion #Equity #EconomicImpact #Mentalhealth

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! As a diverse and inclusive organization, the ActOne Group is proud to celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of the Hispanic community and recognize the cultures and traditions that have woven their way into the fabric of our country. Recent years have seen Hispanic workers and entrepreneurs have an outsized positive effect on our economy. Not only has the number of Hispanic workers nearly tripled over the past three decades, but according to the USBLS, nearly 1-in-4 new businesses in the United States are Hispanic-owned. In fact, Hispanic Americans had the highest “rate of new entrepreneurship” every year since 2002. These businesses have shown staying power, too. Studies have shown that though nearly half of all Hispanic American businesses pre-pandemic were less than five years old, they rebounded quicker post-lockdown, showing faster growth than non-Hispanic-owned ones.

It's five days until the start of #HispanicHeritageMonth, and my hope is to see brands shift from surface-level celebrations to initiatives that create a lasting impact. The data clearly show that this group faces substantial funding, compensation, leadership representation, and education challenges. - Latino-owned businesses have grown 34% in the last decade, compared to just 1% for all other small businesses. However, only 20% of Latino-owned businesses that applied for national bank loans over $100,000 received funding, compared to 50% of white-owned companies. - Latinas earn only 57 cents for every dollar earned by non-Hispanic white men. - Hispanics hold only 4% of executive positions in the U.S. - The Hispanic high school dropout rate is 8% compared to 4% for white students. Only 25.8% of Hispanics have a bachelor's degree or higher, compared to 40.1% of the overall population. With this context in mind, brands can shift from symbolic gestures and deploy year-round commitments to programs that drive the economic empowerment of the segment. So, let us all see your impactful work and genuine commitment to the economic empowerment of the community. Hold the flashy celebrations and logos with tildes, and give us small business grants, always on Latinx creator programs, wage equality for Latinas, representation in C-suite and Board positions, Latinx suppliers, scholarships, and programs to bridge the education and pay gaps.
