Did you ever attend Don Wood's 4G01 - McMaster "Problem Solving and Interpersonal Skills? I recently (spring 2024) checked my course links and found after over 20 years they finally bounced. As I hunted new links I found Prof Don Wood’s 2010 course ppt’s for the first time, Don created these when he was 75! Hamiltion Public Health gave the workshop on Stress in 1994,  they used the Adaptive Stress Response Curve, created by Canadian Hans Selye (nice to find the1936 reference this week https://lnkd.in/gU7aeeyW ). Destroying the Walls We've Built In today's business world, it's not uncommon to find companies closing themselves off from the outside world, limiting their exposure to different industries and perspectives. While specialization has its place, being too insular can stifle creativity and innovation. This notion is akin to my critique of "il valzer delle poltrone," where leaders move between seats within their industry without making the leap into new industries outside their explicit realm of experience. Companies themselves often operate as such – they remain within their comfort zones, hesitant to venture beyond familiar territory. Instead, I believe that the "head" of a company should be within, but its "body" should be influenced by the outside world. Take, for example, the PepsiCo Design & Innovation Center, which operates not from the company's headquarters in upstate New York but from a studio in downtown Manhattan, allowing constant exposure to external influences. This integration of various cultures fosters evolution and innovation within the company. Every aspect of the company should contribute to this effect. Consider TradeStation, one of the most powerful online trading brokerages, which evolved the project of the Miami Bull, originally dubbed "Mission Impossible" due to legal restrictions. Through the collaboration with creative partners and the courage and trust it generated among the company's leadership, the fully-realized project achieved unprecedented results and the company was transformed. Every day at Octonano, we actively seek partnerships and collaborations with external entities to bring fresh perspectives and ideas. As leaders in our office, we expect our team to absorb the moods and energies that we project, and we encourage team members to remain constantly connected, such that there is never a detachment from the synergy of the company.
