The oceans cover over 70 percent of the Earth's surface and play a central role in regulating the climate, producing oxygen and maintaining biodiversity. 🌊 Kungliga Tekniska högskolan research is internationally recognized for its work in maritime robotics, including the development of autonomous underwater and surface vehicles, advanced airframe technology and the sailing merchant ships of the future. The research focuses on monitoring and analyzing ocean ecosystems and promoting seafood production with new techniques and circular systems. These efforts contribute to environmental protection, efficient maritime transportation and economic growth, while training the next generation of engineers and scientists. Today we had the opportunity to listen to the following researchers at Kungliga Tekniska högskolan: Peter Sigray showed some pictures from his recent 45 day long international research expedition on board the icebreaker Oden in the Arctic outside the coast of Greenland. The research group from Kungliga Tekniska högskolan has investigated melting glaciers with the help of underwater robots that collects data as close to the glacier edge as possible. Zeynep Cetecioglu-Gurol presented how phosphorus can be extracted from bottom sediments and thus reduce the load on the Baltic Sea, and be reused as a resource. Fredrik Gröndahl presented research in blue economy and innovation, with a particular focus on the use of marine resources for food, feed, chemicals and energy. Ivan Stenius spoke about underwater technology and maritime robotics at SMaRC - Swedish Maritime Robotics Centre hosted by Kungliga Tekniska högskolan, which is Swedens largest academic investment in underwater robotics. Jakob Kuttenkeuler spoke about the latest development of a new generation of high-tech ships that combine low environmental impact with high efficiency. Jonker Sailplanes (Pty) Ltd team with Prof Attie Jonker: Co-Founder, Shareholder and Director from the School of Mechanical Engineering, North-West University / Noordwes-Universiteit, has been selected as a finalist for the NSTF- South32 Innovation Award: Small Medium and Micro Enterprise (SMME). Since their previous NSTF Award in 2013 for the first model the JS1, Potchefstroom based Jonker Sailplanes have developed and launched two new models of sailplanes. The first of these, the JS3, was a major success with more than 200 international sales. Its superior sporting performance was confirmed during the 2022 World Gliding Championships in Hungary, where the top seven places, and 12 of the top 15 places, in the 18 m class were awarded to pilots who raced with JS3 sailplanes. Jonker Sailplanes has also developed the first electric propulsion aircraft in Africa, the JS3 RES, sporting a retractable electrical propulsion system. It is also the first electric glider in the world with removable batteries. #ogsresearch #citizenscience 👨👨👦👦👨👩👧👦 After three years of experimentation COCAL, the participatory science project designed by OGS, becomes operational and public. 💪 Devices to measure air quality on private cars and public transport buses has been developed and installed thanks to the project's team. In particular, a network of mobile sensors has been developed to monitor air quality (particulate matter) in urban areas in real time. 🚌 The approach is based on the use of several vehicles in which sensors, detection and transmission devices are installed thanks to the collaboration with the local transport company (TPL FVG). 📳 From 2021 COCAL has collected more than 100 million of measurements, which show various hotspots and trends in air pollution in the city of Trieste and are the subject of various scientific publications in international journals. 🔎 https://lnkd.in/gXeTmhu8

During the past six months, I've been dedicating to a research in transport systems field titled "Proposition and analysis of eVTOL flight networks in the state of Santa Catarina" a problem that my advisor Humberto Bettini and I developed seeking to understand the potential of eVTOLs in Brazil. The project intends to explore flight networks for eVTOLs using graph theory methods (hub-and-spoke) and made me stare and study themes like vertiports proposition, advanced air traffic management and others constraints/challenges faced by the eVTOL industry. The image refers to a preliminary network which will be examined through sensitivity analysis in the next months of research. The goal is to determine which routes are viable and which network lead to the optimization of specified objective functions such as lower cost, shorter time, etc. It has been a big challenge - yet a true pleasure - to develop this research applying such an innovative technology in the place where I was born and raised. 🗞 #NEWS 𝗧𝗨 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘇 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗧 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 Technische Universität Graz (TU Graz) has been granted approval by the FFG Austrian Research Promotion Agency to lead the new COMET K1 centre "𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆𝟰𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲." This initiative focuses on enhancing battery safety, extending their service life, and improving sustainability. The project, supported by an investment of about 19 million euros from the FFG, the provinces of Styria and Upper Austria, and industry partners, will be conducted over four years. Key contributions include 6.5 million euros from the FFG, 2.6 million euros from Styria, and 0.6 million euros from Upper Austria, with the remainder coming from industry partners. The centre will build on previous work from the COMET project SafeLIB and will utilize state-of-the-art facilities at the Battery Safety Center Graz. The initiative will also explore the reuse of decommissioned batteries as stationary power storage units. An insightful and captivating program, the Faculty Development Program on Challenges and Opportunities for Satellite Navigation Systems, featured the knowledge of Dr. A. Sivanantharaja. Our mission is to design, develop, and launch LISBON'S NEW SATELLITE, a cutting-edge technological achievement that will push the boundaries of innovation. As part of the competition, the teams are tasked with two missions: The primary mission requires the satellite to do the minimum requirements expected for the satellite’s successful deployment. These requirements consider the assembly process, launch and deployment of the Engineering Model/Pre-Flight Model; Meanwhile, the Secondary Mission allows each team to showcase their legacy, offering an opportunity to think creatively about their contributions to the program. 👥 Our team includes students from various universities and disciplines, organized into five distinct departments: Structures, Electronics & Software, Communications & Control, Research & Development, and Operations & Marketing. 🎯 I named it project A.I.M. -- (Assess-Improve-Mentor) In a healthy society, elders nurture trees 🌳 that will provide shade/fruits for younger generations when they grow up. Similarly, empowering our younger generations who are motivated/eager to learn will provide better generations for a better future, insha'a Allah. 🌍✨🙌 🚀 I am thrilled to share that over the past 2 months, I have been working on project A.I.M. along with my dear colleague Lina Ghonim. This project got accepted by the IEEE ITSS DEIB Fellowship Program offered by the WiE/YP committees led by both Dr. Julie Stephany Berrio Perez and Dr. Catherine M. Elias. 🌐👩🔬 The project is divided mainly into 3️⃣ main steps: 1️⃣ Assessing the needs that younger generation enthusiasts are seeking to know more about. 🕵️♂️🔍 2️⃣ Providing them a chance to Improve their knowledge about it through webinars, workshops, etc. 📚💡 3️⃣ Mentoring their endeavors and activities and guiding their steps. 🧑🏫🗣️ The project is technically sponsored and supported by both Multi-Robot Systems (MRS) Research Group and DRIVeIT Hub. Did you know that ice roughness can affect a wing's aerodynamic performance?❄️ 🛩️     🎓 Riccardo Gaudioso's PhD project, at Technische Universität Braunschweig, Politecnico di Milano, and Safran, deals with the intriguing and complex problem of ice roughness 🧊〰 ❄️. Within aircraft icing, which may represent a serious hazard for an airplane in flight, ice roughness could play a major role in affecting the physics of the airflow️ ✈️.  Think of it as a surface pattern, very irregular, that can easily disturb the air close to the wing surface and determine changes in friction and heat exchange. 🎯Riccardo's work targets such an issue using accurate numerical simulations performed on high-performance computers🖥️, in an attempt to enhance our understanding of the problem and improve our current predictions.    #TRACES_DNJD #MSCA #DNJD EU Science, Research and Innovation #science4all #ScienceCommunication #3MT
