On Tuesday, July 2nd, LAT/AUTh Laboratory of Applied Thermodynamics had the privilege of hosting the 2nd meeting for the NAVGREEN project. The event took place at the Aristotle University’s Research Dissemination Center (KEDEA). This gathering brought together key stakeholders to discuss and advance our holistic approach to optimizing 'Green Shipping'. Throughout the day, we delved into various innovative work packages, including: 🔋 Development of solutions for alternative fuels, their production, storage, and energy management. ⚓ Energy upgrading of ships and ports through advanced design, technological enhancements, and operational solutions. 📊 Implementation of digitization technologies for efficient management of ship operations and port activities. ♻️ Promotion of circular economy principles and energy recovery via green recycling and biofuel production. 📈 Evaluation of the efficiency of our solutions to determine the ideal combination for each unique maritime activity. 🔧 Development of a decision-support tool to aid stakeholders in making the best choices for investments and actions. ⚓Crafting an action roadmap to steer the shipping industry towards decarbonization while providing valuable insights to researchers, shipping companies, marine surveyors, ports, shipbuilders, and equipment manufacturers. A heartfelt thank you to all the organizing members, participants, and stakeholders who contributed to the success of this event. Your collaborative efforts and insightful discussions are pivotal in our journey towards greener, more sustainable maritime activities. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to innovate and lead the charge towards a sustainable future in shipping! Once again the Multi-objective Lichtenberg Algorithm (MOLA) breaks optimization and engineering frontiers. MOLA, MOSFO, NSGA-II, and MOPSO are applied in multi-objective optimization to find the best variables in the High-Energy Ball Milling (HEMB) process, which has been validated as an effective alternative for recycling metal chips. MOLA found the best particle sizes minimizing milling time, thus indicating potential savings of up to 26 process hours and enhancing energy consumption efficiency in Vanadis 8 chip recycling allowing to obtain powders of excellent quality for sintering. An excellent work led by my great friend Elioenai Levi Barbedo and which included the participation and dedication of me, Lucas Antonio, Matheus Barbedo, Matheus Francisco, Guilherme Gomes, and Gilbert Silva. We remain strong in our commitment to science and humanity. #metaheuristics #optimization #mechanicalengineering #powdertechnology #unifei #vanadis8 See the full paper: https://lnkd.in/dKmai5xE

Head of Research Department at Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nuremberg for Renewable Energies / Forschungszentrum Jülich
☝ Last week I was thrilled to present at the workshop "International Cooperation on Innovative Materials for Energy Workshop" hosted by Rosalinde van der Vlies, Green Planet director at the European Commission together with Hélène Chraye, on our Materials Acceleration Platform AMANDA and the potential of MAPs. The workshop was moderated by Mark S Kozdras and Holger Ihssen and highlighted also the Mission Innovation activities for accelerating the discovery of new energy materials. There were some very good discussions, which hopefully will result in more funding by the EU for the development of materials acceleration platforms and harnessing the synergies that we have between various disciplines. 👉 I learned a lot again. It was the first I heard about the DIADEME project in France where a number of specialized MAPs is created, the COST Action EU-MACE that is using digitization and automation to boost energy materials research, found out about SLAMD (https://lnkd.in/e9YSfPFe) at Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung and more. 😲 ...and then this week I see that MAPs are even discussed at the White House https://lnkd.in/eqnQeBei in this post by Dana Weinstein. Now that is the next level! By the way, I really liked my association as "MAP Developer" 😊 #materialsscience #advancedmaterials #datascience #robotics #materialsresearch #energymaterials

At the “Statustagung Maritime Technologien “ (#Maritime #Technologies Status Conference) on December 6 in Berlin, our colleague Felix Dahms will present our current funding project #SimPleShip in the pitch for climate-neutral #shipping projects - MARITIME.zeroGHG. With our innovative #simulation platform for model-based system analysis, we contribute to two fundamental issues in the maritime industry: ❓ How should the future #energy supply on board of ships be designed? ❓ How can the #efficiency of existing ship systems be improved? We will address the particular challenges associated with the complex infrastructure of passenger ships (comparable to that of a small town!) and present our approach of an easily accessible platform in the form of a web app that can also be used to predict real-life scenarios such as a zero-emission fjord maneuver. This enables us to make statements about how a possible battery pack should be dimensioned. Are you interested? Feel free to contact Felix Dahms or stay tuned by visiting us on www.fvtr.de.

Today a GREC LabModel v3 breakthrough was achieved by a candidate group, Erik Widström, Simon Eriksson and Richard Zetterman, at Linköping University. They are now able to revolve the motorised WGV for experiments in speeds up to 3Hz with logging of pressure! One step closer to proof of concept! Their success rests on earlier research in well-documented GREC Sustainable projects delivered by motivated, successful Technologist groups with dedicated supervisors at Linköping University, Sweden, world leaders in Sustainable Revolving Carnot Technology. https://lnkd.in/eBYUjYv8 #sustainable #heatengine #thermodynamics #fluiddynamics #climatechange

😊 I'll be speaking at the Kongsberg Agenda Tech Festival on June 20th about my PhD work at the University of South-Eastern Norway. My driven force? Innovating sustainable solutions through cutting-edge materials science. From novel catalysts to efficient Hydrogen, the future is here with academic and industrial cooperation. 🌱 We're harnessing the high surface area, huge porosity, exceptional stability and crystallinity of the melamine-based metal covalent organic frameworks (MCOFs) to tackle the high electricity costs associated with water splitting. These MCOFs present a promising alternative electrode for existing electrolyzers. Plus, the hydrogen (H₂) generated at the cathode is clean and can be combusted back into water, offering a sustainable energy pathway. 🖐 If you're into cool new materials, clean energy, or simply a green-hearted, see you this 20th at Bergseminaret Bergkandidatværelset. There will be a Q&A section following my talk. 🎯 More than that? From June 19th to 20th, many tech talks are across the Kongsberg city, from cybersecurity and AI to space exploration and automation. Please check their website to see the topics, speakers, location, time and preferred language. About my sharing: https://lnkd.in/dRma-ua7 #KongsbergAgenda #Sustainability #PhDResearch #USN #Material

This animated visualization is truly remarkable.
The materials humans have created in the last century now out weight the total biomass on earth. For visual thinkers like myself, this visualization does a great job at putting it in perspective https://biocubes.net/
