👩🏫✨Culture and Etiquette Understanding culture and etiquette is critical when visiting an Arab country to show respect and avoid misunderstandings. Familiarity with local customs, such as greetings, dress codes, and social norms, fosters positive interactions and demonstrates cultural sensitivity. This awareness helps build trust and rapport, which is essential for both personal and professional relationships in Arab societies. “Learning Arabic for business goes beyond grammar and Arabic idioms; it’s an immersion into a rich cultural landscape. This knowledge is invaluable in business settings, where understanding local etiquette and cultural nuances can make or break deals. One notable example of such etiquette is the importance of not showing the soles of your shoes, which is considered disrespectful in many Arab cultures. This is because the sole of the shoe is the lowest part and pointing it towards someone can be seen as a sign of disrespect. Additionally, it is important to be aware that prolonged eye contact might be considered disrespectful in Arab cultures, as it implies a level of familiarity or challenge that might not be appropriate, especially in formal settings or with higher-ranking individuals in a professional context. By mastering Arabic, leaders not only gain a strategic tool for communication but also an essential key to understanding the deeper cultural dynamics that influence business in the Arab world. This combined linguistic and cultural knowledge significantly enhances the ability to engage effectively and respectfully, leading to more productive outcomes and stronger business relationships.” (J. Nario)

Learning a new language in less than 9 months has been both challenging and incredibly rewarding. It's not just about mastering vocabulary and grammar; it's about understanding a new culture and way of thinking. This journey has deepened my appreciation for the diversity of our world and prepared me to communicate effectively in Turkiye. Multilingualism is invaluable in diplomacy. It enhances our ability to engage with diverse communities, build trust, and foster international cooperation. Speaking the language(s) of the assigned country allows diplomats to navigate complex cultural landscapes, negotiate more effectively, and represent their countries with greater authenticity and respect. Immersive language training, in particular, has been crucial. Being surrounded by the language daily speeds up learning and provides real-world context that textbooks alone cannot offer. So too, learning from native speakers and expanding my reading practice beyond news articles to editorial and commentary style writing. Learning a language over the age of 40 presents its own set of challenges. It requires a great deal of dedication, patience, and resilience. It has required daily commitment to seek learning opportunities large and small: podcasts, television series, articles, and hallway conversations (and frankly, a whole lot of napping). The six months of language training so far have given me a profound respect for the linguistic and cultural richness of Turkiye. Here's to the final push! #diplomat #altac #lifelonglearning #communications
