Things to follow in a new job: 1. Try to understand the business and don't just run towards the database and insights of work in the first 2 weeks. 2. Communicate with stakeholders and people you will be working with. 3. Take initiative to introduce yourself to people when you are working in a remote environment, that's your responsibility no one is going to tell you this. 4. Your First Day As A Data Analyst You spend the morning onboarding, in the afternoon your manager gives you a new dataset and asks you to build a simple sales analytics dashboard from it. First reaction - cool, real data, real problems. Second reaction - panic, what if I screw it up. So you grab your new laptop and start doing analysis of the data. This is basically where both you and the company have screwed up. You should have known from interviewing that the company doesn't have any staff doing data governance - so no curated data. The company should know you don't give a new employee a new, uncharted set of data. Every data set released to analytics needs to go through data analysis and curation. It may not even meet the criteria for analytics and a dashboard. So now you are throwing your new employee down a rabbit hole and praying they come out intact. If the data is screwy they will waste a lot of time chasing a dashboard that nobody will ever use. The new employee feels disrespected, the company feels disappointed. First impressions matter. Now you understand that if I am interviewing I am always interested in the org chart (even if it has no names). It shows if the company has a real data team, and whether it is likely you will get stuck doing 3 jobs at once. You need to work out what are red flags for you. Then you know the questions that you need to ask, and the answers you expect. Obfuscation is in itself a meaningful answer - it means they are embarrassed about their data team. If a company is proud, they will always use that to impress you. #data #database #dataanalysis

You're doing it all wrong! Don't make the mistake of setting the strategy and then hiring experts to execute. Instead, do your due diligence, figure out whether or not the initiative is worth pursuing. Then, hire or recruit the experts to set and help execute the strategy. Yes, this probably means you're going to have to work out the budget as you go. I've seen too many organizations setting strategies before hiring people with the expertise. This happens in marketing, sales, and in all things data! It seems like organizations are still failing to acquire the people and technology to set and implement effective data management strategies.
