Always a great day marching with Liverpool John Moores University for Pride 🌈 In my semester one module, Equality, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging at Liverpool Business School, we’ll be digging into why events like Pride are so crucial for the LGBTQ community. This level 6 undergraduate module, part of our HRM degree, will tackle some really important issues. We'll explore the Equality Act and its role in protecting the rights of all LGBTQ individuals, ensuring everyone is treated fairly and with respect. We’ll also reflect on the impact of Section 28, a piece of legislation that prohibited the "promotion" of homosexuality by local authorities and schools, and discuss its lingering effects on education and society. Understanding how the history and legacy of such laws influence today's society is vital. For instance, at work, more than a third of LGBTQ staff (35%) have hidden their identity for fear of discrimination. Almost one in five (18%) have experienced negative comments or conduct from colleagues because of their identity. In universities, two in five LGBTQ students (42%) have hidden their identity due to fear of discrimination, with more than a third of trans students (36%) facing negative comments or conduct from staff. These statistics highlight the ongoing challenges and the importance of creating environments where everyone feels they belong and matter. There’s still much work to be done to ensure that everyone feels valued. I’m excited to engage with our students on these topics and share in their passion for making a difference. 🌈 #Pride #LGBTQ #Equality #Section28 #TransInclusion #Diversity #Inclusion #Belonging #LJMU #HRM For more detailed statistics and information, visit Stonewall's website. OGAT (OUTWOOD) AND SUSPENSIONS: MYTH OR REALITY? Given who the new HMCI is, there has been a fair bit of huffing and puffing about suspension rates in Outwood (OGAT) schools. Some recent 'scoops' have been hardly a revelation - the DfE publishes the data for us! Detractors say the high-suspension rate policy in OGAT is punishing the disadvantaged, whilst fans say it is a short term tactic to get stability for long term benefit. So which is it? Let's start by considering the long term patterns in four of the most obvious of their academies. We can compare these to the national rate in secondary schools, which has generally been around 4%. The first thing we can say is that these schools are always well above the national level - in fact they are rarely less than FOUR times above it and often TEN times above apart from one single occasion in one school. It is also true to say that generally the schools were generally higher at the start - with Bishopsgarth topping 208% and so going off the top of my chart. So does it work in the long term? Maybe you think Adwick proves the case for the defence and it is certainly lower than it was at the start...but the problem is that still puts it six times higher than national. It also leaves it higher than the LA figure....which is higher than most, for reasons which you can perhaps guess. Two of the schools appear to have lost control after Covid, which may be an excuse, but not THAT much of one. Back in the day when I worked a lot in Special Measures schools, there was an accepted belief that you might need to have high suspensions for a term or so while you got the school under control and improved the teaching/curriculum/pastoral system. But if you have not got there after eight years that might suggest the tactic is not working..... So this is a sample, but maybe after Christmas I will look at all of them.... #ofsted #behaviour #schools
