Following the retirement of Dr David Fearnley after an incredible 30 years in the NHS, we would like to introduce our new Chief Medical Officer for the Trust, Dr Gareth Thomas who will officially start his role today.
To politicians and voters
1. Ignoring important demographic data within the context of amazing (and costly) medical innovation
2. Believing in free medical care; proof: governments ignoring the financial and economic realities of demand vs offer!
In truth, for at the last 3 decades, governments, their politicians and Healthcare Ministry civil servants have known that the system is underfunded inefficient/ineffective, secondary to theft and waste exploited by a very profitable healthcare industry, think, pharma, technology, research, equipment, infrastructure - still, provincial budget planning has not changed relative to other provincial expenses and federal transfers have significantly decreased.
Many other issues also plague the Canadian HC system, however, becoming informed consumers of healthcare services, drugs and devices would go a long way in facilitating smart choices moving forward.
Headlines about physician and nurse shortages directly impede our capacity to tackle the problems. The shortages are outcomes, symptoms of a bad system- not the problem. It is time to ask more of the ‘people in charge’.
Imagine working 40 plus years only to find out retiring means over 1400 plus patients will no longer have a family doctor as a result. The heartbreaking pressures on older physicians across Canada personified by one doctor from Lindsay Ontario #familymedicineCTV News

These* hospitals (now closed) bought by private equity firms like:
Cerberus Capital Management
Leonard Green & Partners (LGP) &
Apollo Global Management, Inc.
in a move that stripped the hospitals of one of their prime assets, the owners #SoldTHELand that the 🏥 hospitals were built on to Medical Properties Trust, Inc. (MPT). MPT now owns $16B of hospital real estate.
What did MPT do?
Charge #Rent to hospitals for property that used to be theirs!
Investors getting rich off of hospitals --> hospitals close due to bankruptcy --> patients that live in these communities have limited & delayed access to care.
"at least 13 hospitals have closed or gone #bankrupt after their land was sold to MPT. And the damage is far from over. In January, MPT reported that its biggest tenant, a nationwide chain of 32 hospitals called Steward Health Care, could no longer pay its $400M rent per year. The announcement — which has left health officials scrambling for fallback plans to provide care to the 2.2 million people served by Steward — could foreshadow more #hospitalclosings to come."
Hospitals that closed (abbreviated list):
Northside Regional Medical Center in Youngstown, Ohio
Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling, West Virginia
East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry, Ohio
St. Luke's Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona
and so many more listed here: https://lnkd.in/gGG5U6Pv
