This is not a pretty desk lamp. It is, however, one of my most valuable personal possessions. This is the lamp my grandfather took to college in 1920. I grew up with the lamp on the living room desk. I took the lamp to Rolla then Stanford then Rolla then Cornell then Georgetown. Now the reveal. The light bulbs have never been changed. They are over 100 years old. Detroit. One of the Garden's brightest stars. Yet one of the Density's most troubled outposts. A city that was once a shining beacon of the American dream, led by the "Big 3" automakers, had declined into a vortex of abject hopelessness. It became the butt of every running joke. The poster child for urban decline. An example of a national dream left in tatters and ruin. Until a new "Big 3" emerged. Three visionaries named Keisha, Abdul and Marcus who were born and bred in this very city. Three sons and daughters of this embattled land who refused to concede its descent into oblivion. Three souls who decided to forge its new path. They formed a consortium of other visionaries within the city, convening once a week to reverse-engineer what the Detroit of tomorrow would look like. It will be safe for its children. It will have opportunities for innovation. It will attract the best and brightest. It will release the chains of yesterday and embrace the infinite potentialities of tomorrow. Each Big 3 meeting drew larger and larger crowds. And each attendee was given one small action item per week to implement. A tutoring session for a local child. Patronage of a new small business. Marketing the city to a friend elsewhere. The antarctic ice of hopelessness began to thaw one inch at a time. The city of tomorrow was gradually becoming the city of today. And the Big 3 would serve as its guides into the brightest corner of the Garden. ----------------- A better world is coming. Because of you.

Our city would benefit greatly by more formally engaging our students, both high school and university/college, because they are allowed to envision our future (as they'll be living it). The students and faculties at SDUSD, UCSD, SDSU, USD, UCSM, Palomar, Sweetwater, and City College all have the energy and ability to bring big ideas to the future of San Diego... that they can champion to build in the future. It's a powerful source of innovation that is being left on the table when discussing our long-standing housing, homeless, and climatic crises. How? Invite them to lead the vision plans for our community plan updates, our historical resources reforms, and housing action plan 3.0.
