Major American cities such as New York and San Francisco face serious problems — empty offices, population shifts, and declining tax revenues. I sat down with Columbia Professor Stijn Van Nieuwerburgh to discuss the 'urban doom loop', a cycle of spillover effects triggered by pandemic-era policies. Check out my latest video to learn more about the so-called 'urban doom loop' threatening American cities, and what local governments can do to avoid falling further into fiscal trouble.

Does ‘trickle out’ work? This interesting report from Centre for Cities explores the hypothesis that the prosperity of big cities spreads to nearby towns and villages, benefitting residents outside of the metropolis. Looking at the eight largest cities in England after London, it shows that trickle out economics is effective: incomes in surrounding towns and villages are on average higher than for big city dwellers; towns and villages with larger commuting links to big cities have higher average incomes; and the underperformance of most big cities reduces access to prosperity. https://lnkd.in/edZsFjG8
