We dug deep into what it takes to bring in people who do more than deliver content—they shape the heart of your school! Principal Lawrence dropped some gems 💎 about what to look for in a candidate, and it’s more than just credentials: 📝 Check their extracurriculars: What do they do outside of teaching? Look for activities that show they’re community-focused. Whether it's coaching, running a chess club, or being involved in sports, these are indicators they’ll bring value beyond the classroom walls. 👂 Listen to their beliefs about students: The most important part of any interview? Hearing what they truly believe about what students can achieve. Are they growth-oriented? Do they have high expectations? This speaks volumes about how they’ll impact your school culture. There are IMPACTFUL jobs out there where the skills of Women's and Gender Studies and Ethnic Studies students are needed, and can be put to good use. Beginning to look at job postings well prior to graduation is a great way to begin to see what kinds of leadership and experience these organizations are looking for. And then, build those skills through your volunteer, project-based, and internship experiences at DePaul. The best organizations actively embrace and celebrate community in their work. What sets them apart is a deliberate and strategic people-focus, starting with the fact that we are, generally, more alike than not. Central to these communities is a commitment to core principles like cultural intelligence/cultural quotient. They effectively and respectfully navigate a mosaic of values, points of view and range of differences. In doing so, they create the space and opportunities to see, hear and honor the totality of their workforce. Considerable research continues to point to the need for and value of diverse generational workplaces. Transformative organizations live this daily and they have impressive (and sustainable) engagement as a testament to their success.

Last week's @DSIX Connect explored university recruiting strategies, particularly in situations where recruiting budgets may be presently limited. Members shared helpful advice for a member who is facing budget and geographic restrictions. This included how to effectively connect with students virtually by providing useful knowledge and coaching rather than just company self-serving recruiting outreach. The group discussed virtual office hours and the importance of leveraging alumni to forge connections and diversify talent pipelines. Most participants felt that HBCU’s have a strong preference for in-person engagement which all acknowledged will be challenging in limited budget situations. We then discussed ways to create a culture of belonging in the workplace. Members discussed the role of inclusive leadership and how it contributes to retention. Strengthening cross-team partnerships and integrating inclusive behaviors into performance management were also identified as crucial steps for fostering diversity, inclusion, and workforce growth moving forward.
