On this International Women's Day, I find myself reflecting on the profound journey of women, their resilience, and their unyielding spirit in the face of adversity. It's a day that resonates deeply with me, weaving through my own narrative of love, and loss. As the world celebrates the myriad achievements of women, my heart is heavy with the stories of those who, like me, have navigated the tumultuous path of secondary infertility, miscarriages, and the heart-wrenching decisions that often accompany such personal trials. My journey has been marked by the joy of conceiving and the profound sorrow of losing three babies to miscarriage. It's a pain that is both unique and shared, a silent thread connecting countless women across the globe. The decision to terminate two pregnancies was not made lightly; it was a choice enveloped in a melancholic hope for a future where the health and wellbeing of a mother and child are paramount. This International Women's Day, my call to action is born from a place of intimate understanding and unwavering conviction. It's a plea to stand in solidarity with all women as we navigate these turbulent waters. We must channel our collective power to advocate for the sanctity of reproductive rights and the freedom to make decisions about our bodies and our futures. Today, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, marks the launch of the UNiTE campaign by the United Nations (UN), an initiative of 16 days of activism concluding on 10 December. The campaign calls for urgent investments to prevent violence against women and girls, and uses the hashtag #NoExcuse. It also outlines the adverse psychological, sexual and reproductive health consequences caused by violence against women and girls. While 2024 promises to be a groundbreaking year for women's health, we must also confront the significant setbacks of the past year. The erosion of reproductive rights and restricted access to care for the LGBTQ community, including in North Carolina, underscore the urgent need for focused action on healthcare equity. As a dedicated advocate for women's health, I'm both challenged and inspired by the landscape ahead. The spotlight on women's health is long overdue. For too long, women's health issues have been under-researched, underfunded, and under-discussed. But the tide is turning. From advancements in reproductive health to breakthroughs in heart disease and breast cancer research, we're witnessing an era of unprecedented focus and innovation. Let's champion this momentum to ensure women's health issues receive the attention and resources they deserve. Together, we can make 2024 a year of action and achievement for women's health. Happy International Women's Day #IWD2024 Today is about celebrating women's achievements, raising awareness about discrimination and continuing the mission to drive gender parity. This year's theme is 'Invest in women: Accelerate Progress' and this follows a string of good news regarding funding for women across many sectors, not least the amazing announcement by #potus yesterday in the state of union speech in which up to $12B will be committed to women's health research. Despite important days like today, where we should absolutely celebrate progress and achievements, we should spare some time to think about the women around the world who are less fortunate. Even in 2024, 800 women or girls die every day because of pregnancy or childbirth complications. 1 in 3 women suffer sexual or physical violence in their lifetime, and their continues to be unthinkable challenges for women in conflict zone. In order to overcome these challenges we MUST start by putting women and girls at the heart of everything we do, and every Government/major institution worldwide should ensure this is a priority. We all have a role in achieving this, and despite the magnitude of the problem, collective action is the only we will succeed.

Change is what we achieve together

Women are treated as second-class citizens in many countries in the world. In the United States, women still have to fight for their reproductive rights. It is 2024. Think about this for a minute. We are talking about bodily autonomy. A basic human right. --- Violence against women is at epidemic levels: - It is sadly part of our daily life. Men disposability is embedded in the fabric of society: - It is sadly part of our daily life. These issues are not gender issues: they are cultural issues. We live in a culture that denigrate feminine attributes. It hurts everyone. 💔 We need to: 1) Eliminate the zero sum thinking, once and for all. 2) Address the larger imbalance of masculine and feminine attributes and stop attributing them different inner value, based on who is performing them. ➡️ Otherwise we will remain stuck. Stuck in a battle of the sexes. --- Let us stop splitting our humanity in half.
