Histology professionals are an integral part of the medical diagnostic process, working in anatomic pathology laboratories to prepare, process, analyze, and perform advanced testing on patient tissue specimens. The accuracy, quality, timeliness, and reliability of the results depend on the knowledge and skill of the trained histologist working in conjunction with a pathologist to arrive at a definitive diagnosis necessary for clinical decision-making and effective patient treatment. These professionals play a critical role in ensuring that patients receive accurate diagnoses and effective treatment. They work tirelessly behind the scenes, analyzing patient tissue specimens and performing advanced testing to arrive at a definitive diagnosis. Despite the importance of their work, histology professionals face significant challenges. Pathologists are facing great pressures due to the increasing workload, the growing complexity of their work, and vacancies of 10-12% and rising The number of histopathology requests to laboratories has increased by an average of 4.5% year on year since 2007. one of the challenges I feel we have in #pathology [specifically in the dental community] is providing educational content at professional conferences that is practical or leads to some type of practiceable skill [in strictly pathology conferences we don't have this issue as much since we can often attend courses at multihead microscopes where we get to see and discuss the cases and develop critical skills in diagnosis and report writing] my intent more and more has been to help the dental community see pathology through the pathologist perspective in a way where they come away with some additional skills; I've actually taken the lead from the #radiology community in this: first, if I do show #histology, I actually discuss the pathology report that comes from that histology [the skill: interpreting the report and the repercussions of the diagnosis as a clinician who will have to manage the outcomes, including surgical and reconstructive/restorative effects] second, my goal is often to help the clinicians write either a clinical or radiographic report or diagnosis in the treatment record third, my intent is always to include skills development in ordering and interpreting laboratory tests and advanced imaging, engaging other healthcare providers in a meaningful way to obtain meaningful answers to meaningful questions, and to interpret responses translated from medical to dental language ways I continue to develop in order to do this: polling and audience engagement [ex. I may ask the audience, "by show of hands, how many people think this is benign... and how many people think this is malignant" or "by show of hands, how many people think this is something that is manageable within your clinical practice or would best be served by a referral, and if you believe a referral is indicated, and you are interested in participating, please shout out who you might refer to" [or do this all through polling software] in some cases, where either the group is small enough or I have the ability to break the audience up into smaller groups in the time allotted, I may give them clinical images or radiographic images to look at and as a small group exercise develop a differential diagnosis or come to concurrent on how they might in the record and then come back to the larger group and share thoughts

What is a Histology (Histo) Technologist? Histotechnologists prepare slides of sections of body tissue for microscopic examination by pathologists. In fact, the prefix "histo" means "tissue". These professionals perform complex procedures for processing body tissue and must make judgments concerning the quality of results. The process of preparing human tissue specimens includes tissue fixation, dehydration, sectioning, mounting, and special staining. This work is often done while a surgical team awaits a pathologist’s diagnosis. Therefore, the work must be done extremely quickly and accurately. A histotechnician works under the supervision of a histotechnologist. Types of Work Environments Hospitals Research laboratories Education and Training Requirements Histotechnologists earn a four-year bachelor's degree and acquire one year of training. Histotechnicians earn a two-year associate's degree.
