Mukul Arora (Co-Managing Partner, Elevation Capital), flagged off the recent TechSparks Delhi 2023 with insights and advice for founders, and his reading on technology in India in a keynote fireside chat with Shradha Sharma (Founder & CEO, YourStory Media). Here are some takeaways from the discussion, where he advised startups raising funds in the current environment to look at capital as fuel and not as an end outcome. ✦ "The end outcome is whether your customers like (your product) or not. If that is happening, long-term valuation will happen” ✦ “In times like these, it is a little harder to raise capital but that lets you be razor-focused on building something differentiated, going towards a product market fit” ✦ “The more transparent the two partners (founders and VCs) are with each other, the more fruitful that relationship becomes” He also highlighted the emerging opportunity for Indian founders to utilise AI in their businesses for their growth. With the deceleration of VC funding in India, early-stage investors find reassurance in profitable exits, enhancing the attractiveness and reputation of the angel investment category. In an article on “Exits abound for Indian angel investment platforms despite funding slowdown”, Padmaja Ruparel, Co-founder, Indian Angel Network and Founding Partner, IAN Fund I, commented, “We should see some more exits from our Fund I before the end of this fiscal. And we want to return funds back to the investors. We are still bullish on WoodenStreet and hence the partial exit. I believe that good companies will continue to attract new investors. These are companies that are focused on topline and bottom line and not obsessed with valuations,” she added. In 2022, Indian Angel Network achieved a remarkable 13 exits from its portfolio companies. With an initial investment of Rs. 28 crores in these startups, Indian Angel Network generated cash exits nearly 4x that amount, while investors retained shares valued at Rs. 180 crores. Great to see many more start ups lined for an IPO after some successful ones this year. The article below does not cover the start ups that are going to list on the small board and I know there a few lined up there as well. Many investors (including Angels like myself & VCs) will end their journey here and along with founders who are making partial exits, will go out there with more firepower and more vigour to invest in and support a host of new start ups. I have been following Temasek's journey into building its own startups. Three years after Temasek began its journey into venture building, it seems to have hit some hurdles with three of its startups: GoodWorker, Trustana, and Affinidi. These companies were one of the first to come out Temasek's stable. While GoodWorker was shuttered, there were layoffs and exits at the other two startups.
