Database legends, Michael Stonebraker and Andy Pavlo, released a great paper last week! It covered the last two decades in data warehouses and database tech pretty well, but I felt like it missed one special ingredient... the special sauce I would include in any data stack. The universal semantic layer is something that solves some of the issues mentioned at the end of paper, especially in relation to using NL/LLMs with data warehouses. This week's post in my substack covers this topic and some of my other thoughts and findings from the paper. https://lnkd.in/eQhbvmsa

📊 Daily SQL Day 8: Enhancing Your SQL Knowledge! 🚀 🔍 Data Querying Command: LIMIT (or TOP) - Sometimes, you don't need the entire dataset. LIMIT or TOP lets you set the max number of rows you want, streamlining your results. 💼 Data Modification Command: TRUNCATE TABLE - Clean slate! This command erases all records in a table, ideal for a fresh start or data maintenance. 📖 SQL Fact of the Day: SQL is a versatile language used in Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) for complex data analysis and Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) for real-time, high-volume transactions. 🌐 Stay tuned for more SQL insights and expand your database expertise. In a direct query to the #database or within a server-side function, a multiline transaction in Fauna has the capability to both read and write using the data within the same transaction, all while ensuring global strong consistency. An example in Fauna Query Language (FQL): let cust = Customer.byId("390546271917572161") if (cust!.billingStatus == "Active") { Order.create({ customer: cust, shippingAddress: cust.address, status: "initial" }) } This sounds like a simple concept, but not all #NoSQL databases can read data and then write in the same transaction. Even fewer can have that same transaction be strongly consistent across geographically dispersed replicas. Fauna can do both. For more, check out: https://lnkd.in/g2jmxYf3
