Check out how Beta Engineering and San Diego Gas & Electric used innovation, ingenuity, and teamwork to serve the San Juan Capistrano community in southern California! Way to #WinToghether and #QuestionTheStatusQuo💡
This 1918 substation will soon provide increased reliability to Southern California’s power grid thanks to an extensive expansion and upgrades. Hear from San Diego Gas & Electric Senior Public Affairs Manager Duane Cave and Beta Project Manager Rick Lateer what this project means for the San Juan Capistrano community & how gas-insulated switchgear offered a critical solution to expanding within limited space. We are proud to have overseen this historic #substation expansion project, supporting our partners at SDG&E as they serve their growing communities. Thank you to everyone who’s worked on this project, especially to Duane Cave, SDG&E Project Manager Omar Miranda, and Rick Lateer. On a personal note, congratulations to Duane, who’s celebrating retirement after 46 years at San Diego Gas & Electric! #growingourcommunity #gasinsulatedswitchgear #highvoltage #substations Richard Lateer

Happy to see my team's work being recognized by Jeff St. John and Canary Media Inc.! This is exactly what we were going for when we designed the program: [Demand Side Grid Support] is available across the state, and it’s also relatively simple to take part in, according to Sunrun's Chris Rauscher, J.D.. That’s because it avoids the complexities of traditional demand-response programs, such as the “baseline” methods that estimate how much power customers would have used to determine how much they get paid for reducing consumption beyond that point — a counterfactual approach that’s led to all manner of disputes and challenges between utilities, grid operators and demand-response providers. Instead, the DSGS program’s approach to batteries is to simply measure how much power they actually inject back into the grid. Rauscher credits this type of structure with opening up the market for solar-battery systems in other markets such as Massachusetts and Hawaii. “Those simple programs are the ones that achieve the greatest success and reach the largest number of customers,” he said. That provides “a level of predictability that can allow us to offer our customers a clear value proposition at scale.” https://lnkd.in/gMwg9QR3

The Utility Undergrounding Life-Cycle Cost Guide identifies multiple investor-owned utilities, electric cooperatives, and municipal system operators embracing strategic undergrounding in every part of North America. High-profile examples include Dominion Energy’s Strategic Undergrounding Program, Florida Power & Light’s two programs including Storm Secure Underground Program and municipality/community-initiated underground conversions, Georgia Power Company’s Grid Investment Program, San Diego Gas & Electric’s Strategic Undergrounding Program, and Pepco’s DC PLUG, among others. The Utility Undergrounding Life-Cycle Cost Guide was developed by the Power Delivery Intelligence Initiative and Continuum Capital. It helps utilities assess and choose narrowly defined line segments where strategic undergrounding provides the lowest life-cycle cost and will achieve resiliency and reliability targets. 🔌 Building for the Future: The Northern Reliability Project Exciting news for those following energy developments in Minnesota! 💡 Great River Energy and Minnesota Prospecting are on course with the Northern Reliability project - an innovative $1 billion transmission line expected to bolster the state's power infrastructure. Spanning 180 miles, the preferred corridor for this 345-kV line connects Grand Rapids to Monticello alongside existing routes, ensuring minimal environmental disruption. The project, due for construction from 2025 to 2030, promises to be a sustaining force in Minnesota's energy shift from fossil fuels towards distributed renewable generation. 🍃 The strategic collaborations with landowners and the recent work to streamline the permitting process highlight the meticulous planning invested in. The transmission upgrades don't just power homes; a UMD study anticipates a $2 billion economic spark, fueling jobs and community growth. 💼 This isn't just a power line; it is a lifeline for a sustainable and thriving Minnesota. 🌱 #EnergyFuture #SustainableDevelopment #MinnesotaPower

"But to address rapid load growth and meet the flexibility demands of the future, we need to stop trying to define VPPs as a monolith and embrace their broad potential use cases across the utility." Very true! Use cases are key 🔑 https://lnkd.in/gGYBU-6F "According to market analysts, there are currently over 500 VPP projects in North America. Within these projects, you’ll find everything from thermostat-based VPPs like Arizona Public Service’s Cool Rewards program, which leverages over 90,000 DERs to keep power supply reliable in the face of extreme heat, to the multi-state ConnectedSolutions VPP program, which dynamically dispatches over 200 megawatts of batteries, thermostats, and EVs to support a range of bulk and distribution grid needs."

I love this! Happening today, 2 pm in Framingham, Mass.: The 1-mile loop will be switched on! #NetworkedGeothermal As Jeff St. John writes, "If scaled up across the country, ground source heat pumps could dramatically reduce the amount of electricity needed to convert buildings from fossil fuels to electric heating and cooling" -- but -- "costs and complexities . . . are out of reach for most building owners." Enter the gas utility companies. St. John explains, "utilities are in the business of financing large-scale energy projects and paying them off over decades" -- a model that "should allow utilities to build the infrastructure for ground-source heat pumps at a much lower cost than individual building owners would pay." #GasToGeo https://lnkd.in/dakP_mRv

This 15 minute podcast provides great insight into how we monitor and maintain our facilites. It’s definitely worth a listen #EnergyForWhatMattersMost
CenterPoint Energy has been serving the Greater Houston area for nearly 160 years, and our commitment to our customers remains stronger than ever today. As the region continues to experience rapid growth and more frequent extreme weather events, we’re dedicated to building a stronger, smarter and more adaptable grid to help face these unique challenges. I enjoyed the opportunity to join Craig Cohen on this morning’s edition of Houston Public Media’s Houston Matters, to share the important work our team does daily, to deliver the safe, reliable and resilient electric service our 2.8 million customers have come to depend on. If you missed our conversation, you can listen to it here: https://lnkd.in/gU7CJbkp
A downed utility pole may be partly to blame for the largest wildfire in Texas history… should we be worried about utility poles in Houston?
