It's 🐾 National Animal Shelter Appreciation 🐾 week!! What better way to appreciate our local shelters than to adopt from them? Here are some great steps to take if you're looking to adopt a new friend! 🐶💙 1. Look Up Your Local Shelters! There are so many wonderful animals at your local shelters just waiting to get adopted! Look at the shelter website to see the process for adoption, and look at their pet list to see if they have a friend for you! 2. Visit the shelter All of the employees and volunteers will be able to show you around, introduce you to the animals, and tell you which one will be the best fit for you! The more you visit, the more comfortable the animals will be around you! 3. Connect with your new friend! It’s important to make a connection with your new friend before you get them! At shelters, you are able to pet, walk, and play with any pets before adoption to see if they’re the right fit. 4. Ask About Animal Needs Some animals will be better in a house without other animals; some might be good in a house with kids, and some might have dietary needs. Asking about special needs will help you find your perfect match, and everyone will go home happily! 5. Organize All Needed Documents If you rent, you may need a signed letter from your renter granting permission for pets. Sometimes, you need to provide legal identification like a driver's license, birth certificate, or passport. This handsome boy arrived at the shelter as a stray on May 27th. In spite of his large size, Chalmers is actually quite a timid, shy pup who is quite uncertain of his new surroundings. Chalmers does best with humans who can go at his pace and let him take the lead while he adjusts to new people and experiences. With a little bit of patience and some gentle encouragement, Chalmers goes from scared and reserved to a Velcro dog who follows you around the room like a shadow! Chalmers has had positive interactions with other dogs here at the shelter, so he might be comfortable in a multi-dog home. He would love to meet any future canine siblings prior to adoption to make sure everyone gets along! Chalmers is hoping to find a fur-ever home to give him a second chance at life. I saw a post showing an older dog that was abandoned in a park near the City of Aurora Animal Shelter.
