Have you ever thought of feathers and their use in circular bioeconomy? Those of free range happy chicken of course! Feathers contain nearly 90% keratin, the innovative materials arising from this new value chain will present additional advantages at the end of the product’s life: keratin-based materials are targeted to be zero waste and allow for controlled biodegradability, while also enriching soils with organic nitrogen. Some products derived from feathers include seed trays, nonwoven geotextiles, mulch films and hydroponic foams. Due to the enormous production capacity Germany is big sink of resources. While the first part is true, Germany is also on a constant search on how to do more with less. Take for example the innovation and research site Innovationsstandort :metabolon some 40 km from the Cologne. The locale is built on a former landfill and offers education in real life on - Resource efficiency and conservation - waste avoidance - Circular Economy Further it features a research area of the metabolon Institute (MET) of the Cologne University of Applied Sciences researching recycling, semi industrial plants for chemical recycling and pyrolysis. metabolon also is an operating waste management center separating waste streams, for example with a fermentation and composting plant.   #sustainability #circulareconomy #knowledgesharing #circularity #energyefficiecy

Sometimes the easiest answer is to pond-er. As water becomes an even more precious resource, Limoneira has approached the limitation in a different fashion. Using patented technology, Limoneira developed a biological wastewater treatment facility to clean wastewater from farm worker housing and process it to CA Title 22 reclaimed water standards. By having this facility, Limoneira ensures that sustainability is being thought of from multiple dimensions.

I’m happy to have supported the BioGründer Wettbewerb and new start-ups for more than 10 years now. From this year I would like to share two exciting innovations with you, both focussing on by-products in food production. #Nunos https://nunos.bio/ uses a biological method to process nitrogenous slurry into a fertilizer solution. Emissions are reduced when the fertilizer is applied, good for the environment and people. The method was originally developed by #DLR for use on lunar or mars stations. #Proservation https://proservation.eu/ developed sustainable and plastic-free cushioning packaging made from residual spelt husks. This by-product is produced in large quantities during grain production. #sustainability, #futureoffarming
