Birdwatchers in my network: this is what we are capable of at Kenniscentrum LCAB - Hogeschool Leiden! Elucidating bird species identity using state of the art genetic sequencing, including the bioinformatics!
Vorig jaar vertelde ik over een project waarin studenten van de Hogeschool Leiden met behulp van DNA de ware identiteit van een Koningseider achterhaalden. De eerste resultaten wezen toen op een hybride, maar uit nader onderzoek bleek het toch om een zuivere Koningseider te gaan. Een leerzaam project (ook voor de begeleider).
De resultaten zijn inmiddels gepubliceerd in het Vlaamse natuurtijdschrift Natuur.oriolus.
Dank aan Anita Dirks-Mulder en Marijn Knip voor de begeleiding en organisatie. De studenten Lars Wiedijk, Katinka Touw, Fleurie Kruidhof en Anouk Twigt voerden het labwerk uit.

It is time for an update. It is now exactly 1 year ago since I have graduated from my BSc Animal Sciences, and have started the MSc programme of Animal Sciences with a specialisation in Animal Nutrition & metabolism at Wageningen University & Research.
What drives me?
--> The challenges in feed technology, potentials in new/sustainable raw materials and feed formulation sciences.
I would like to thank Stichting Bevordering Studie Diervoeding (BSD) for providing me with a scholarship that makes studying my interests possible!

Injustice comes with activism.
Activism comes with controversy.
Controversy comes with discomfort.
But let all of this not be a reason to disengage. Let it be a reason to talk. A real dialogue. With the goal of understanding, not defending.
I want to challenge and invite you to read this op-ed by a colleague whom I deeply respect and trust. Especially if you're in any way connected to WUR, and even more so if you've only been reading reports in Resource (the internal WUR magazine). Regardless of your stance on the topic, you should be interested in a view that sheds a different light on the one-sided communication about the student encampments in many media, and particularly Resource.
Before you start reading, I'd like to ask some questions that are keeping me busy these days.
- If speaking out makes you an activist, what does not speaking out make you?
- Why is it always the active choice that needs to be defended? Why shouldn't inaction be the choice that needs defending?
- Is silence and inaction the same as neutrality? And why and how is neutrality morally superior?
- If we do not know what the effects of an action or boycott will be (which nobody can truly predict), it's a gamble either way - why not take the risk of acting?
- Who decided that "scientist" can equate to "passive observer"? When? And why?
- If you still "don't know enough about the topic", what do you need to know enough? And why don't you do your research? Why don't you talk with people about it?
- If you "prefer other ways of action", are you doing them? If yes, can you tell me and others how? If no, why not?
And lastly, a question that will never not make me emotional:
- Why does it seem like Palestinian lives are worth less than others?
If you have the answers, please let me know. In the meantime I will keep trying to work for a world, a WUR, where these questions don't need to be asked. And I'm super proud of all the students and colleagues who are doing so, each in their own ways.
Take care of yourself and of each other. Wherever you are and whatever you do.

Op 15 mei hebben studenten van Wageningen University hun tenten opgezet op de campus om hun eis te onderstrepen voor het verbreken van de banden met onderwijs- en onderzoeksinstellingen in Israël. Het college van bestuur heeft hierop gereageerd met de gemeenplaats van ‘dialoog’ en ‘veilige ruimte’. Onder verwijzing naar academische vrijheid zegt de universiteit een veilige omgeving te willen creëren waar deze tegengestelde opvattingen samen kunnen komen.
Deze reactie van de universiteit is gebaseerd op drie drogredenen.

The scientific institutions & companies located in Flanders succeed in acquiring a growing budget from the European Framework Programmes. Flanders, as a small region, clearly punches above its weight in this internationally competitive environment. This comes out of a new report recently published by Departement Economie, Wetenschap en Innovatie (EWI).
The report shows that 2 of the 5 Flemish universities are in the top 5 of most succesful participants in Europe. It also indicates that, based on the return compared to number of inhabitants, Flemish participation is in 4th place in #Horizon2020 and, with the data already available, currently in the 8th place for #HorizonEurope.

Actiegroep voor studenten en medewerkers van de BSc Aardwetenschappen, BSc Aarde, Economie en Duurzaamheid, MSc Earth Sciences en MSc Hydrology aan de Vrije Universiteit
In deze video spreken Jelle Zijlstra (woordvoerder Greenpeace) en Marjan Minnesma (directeur Urgenda) zich uit voor het belang van Aardwetenschappers in de huidige klimaatcrisis. Ze benadrukken dat de wetenschappelijke kennis en de samenwerking tussen de verschillende expertises binnen de Aardwetenschappen essentieel is voor onze samenleving.
De afdeling Aardwetenschappen aan de Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam dreigt door bezuinigingen in het hoger onderwijs en beleid van de VU wegbezuinigd te worden. Dit terwijl de VU zich profileert als duurzaamste universiteit van Nederland. Daarom spreken we ons uit: laat onze afdeling niet kopje onder gaan!
