🌍 I'm excited to share the successful conclusion of the AI for Developing Countries Forum, held on July 17-18, 2024, at the United Nations Office in Vienna. This landmark event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders to discuss the critical role of AI in fostering sustainable development and bridging the digital divide in developing countries. One of the key outcomes was the adoption of the "AI for Developing Countries Vienna Forum Outcome Declaration," which outlines eleven key points of action and cooperation to ensure that AI benefits all of humanity. Great to join the AI Global Forum and the AI Seoul Summit, co-hosted by the UK and Korea in Seoul, highlighting the importance of international cooperation to ensure safety and innovation of AI. Insights taken from keynote address were that policy makers need to closely work with the industry and experts to better understand rapidly developing AI technology and its benefits & risks. Andrew Ng, Managing General Partner of AI Fund, suggested governments to differentiate applications from technology to apply regulations. This would require acute awareness and comprehensive understanding of AI ecosystem, that can be only supported by close public-private cooperation. I expect such efforts to be boosted by the works of AI Safety Institutes already established and planned to be established in various countries and look forward to their endeavors in addressing tricky balance of safety and technical innovation. #aisafetysummit #aiglobalforum #aiseoulsummit

📌 We had the pleasure of speaking with Ulrik Vestergaard Knudsen, Deputy Secretary General of the OECD - OCDE, about the organization's efforts to lead international cooperation on #artificialintelligence. Since 2019, the OECD has been promoting AI principles focused on trustworthiness, explainability, transparency, accountability, and human-centered approaches. The OECD AI Policy Observatory OECD.AI has gathered over 1,000 policy initiatives on AI and established an incident tracker to monitor generative AI's shortcomings. It also constantly reviews its #AIprinciples to keep them relevant for 2024 and beyond. Ulrik emphasized the importance of interoperability among different regulatory approaches as various countries and regions adopt different strategies. The OECD actively participates in G7, G20, the UN Advisory Board, and other forums to facilitate alignment and cooperation. 🚀 Spain is making significant strides in #artificialintelligence! Back in 2023, we spoke with Alberto Gago Fernandez, Advisor to the Spanish Secretary of State for Digitalisation and AI, about Spain's ambitious strategy on AI. With a budget of €600 million, Spain started integrating AI into value chains while promoting research based on European values and democratic traditions. Alberto stressed the importance of regulation to limit AI's impact on fundamental rights, health, and safety and highlighted the need for a mindset shift to ensure digital technologies always benefit humanity. Spain's #AIstrategy is not just a national endeavor but a collaborative one. The country is currently implementing its strategy, with initiatives such as a sandbox for compliance testing in cooperation with the European Commission. Spain is also working on deploying an AI supervision agency and contributing to regulatory convergence on AI with Latin American and Caribbean countries. Today is the UN’s first AI Governance Day! Representatives across industry, academia, civil society, and UN agencies, from over 70 countries, will convene in Geneva today to officially kick off the AI for Good Global Summit 2024. The KT4D project sees this event as an excellent opportunity to discuss #Democracy and #AI with diverse global speakers from #public and #private sectors exploring how democracy is evolving with new #Technologies. The event will feature many European representatives, emphasising Europe's pioneering AI Act and its impact on democracy, as discussed in KT4D's policy brief and article series on AI and democracy.
