While I didn't have the chance to interview Edvard Munch personally, I did gain 3 important lessons from a visit to the Munchmuseet in Oslo this week: 1. Resilience: I find it fascinating how Munch's resilience as an artist shines through, underscoring the significance of perseverance in the world of creativity. (It was intriguing to learn that Munch faced rejection just like many of us creative individuals.) 2. Signature Work: Of course, visitors gathered around to see "The Scream." But also explored the other 12 floors of work. The idea of a signature piece of art struck me profoundly, with its potential to serve as a gateway to exploring one's extensive body of other work. 3. Prolific Creativity: Edvard Munch's prolific output left a lasting impression on me. It serves as a compelling reminder to all of us to embark on our own creative journeys...and KEEP creating. Moderated by Constanza Salazar and myself Affiliated Society or Committee Name: New Media Caucus Imagined futures, utopian visions, and fabulations of alternative worlds make up recent technological imaginaries that use science fiction, specific cultural cosmologies, and the remaking of technological tools. Based on Sang-Hyun Kim and Sheila Jasanoff’s concept of “sociotechnical imaginaries” which are “collectively imagined forms of social life and social order reflected in the design and fulfillment of nation-specific scientific and/or technological projects” (Jasanoff and Kim, 2009), I focus on the specificity of technological imaginaries that have and continue to emerge in art making practices that rethink technology away from its “technocapitalist” logic of expansion, profit, and extraction (Villa, 2009). Instead, artists and artist-collectives reimagine technology through Afrofuturist aesthetics and ideals, indigenous cosmologies, ecological perspectives, and alternative uses of technology for artistic ends. In this panel, we seek contributions by scholars and artists that expand on the concept of technological imaginaries to help us envision possibilities, ruptures, and potentialities away from the Global North paradigm.

Defining contemporary art galleries as public spheres, curatorial projects that are based in dialogue and dialogics reveal the conflicting and contradictory aspects of dominant cultural narratives. Through collaborative and participatory methods, progressive artists co-create artworks with disenfranchised communities, creating alternatives to the traditional gallery system in which artists, artworks, audiences, and institutions are abstracted from the world around them. With a focus on individuals representing various communities – labour organizations, activist groups, cultural groups, and the art world – insurgent curating is defined in terms of dialogue-based activism. The introduction of dialogue into contemporary art practices marks the emergence of cultural engagement in the public sphere and opens a space for a plurality of voices to enter art system. Participatory and collaborative art has developed out of many streams of contemporary art that have challenged modernist understandings of autonomy. Dialogue-based projects are championed as ways to catalyse emancipatory insights and the critique of neoliberal capitalism. Dialogical theory and practice can help public art galleries transform themselves into public spheres that allow disenfranchised voices to challenge dominant narratives and social structures, using creative forms of dialogue to instigate conscious change from below.
