Reflecting on the development journey at UNDP, I find resonance with Mariana Mazzucato’s insights on the role of consultants in driving impactful change. It’s increasingly evident that the return on investment does not always align with our expectations. While consultants offer valuable expertise, the question arises: are we spending our resources wisely? Undoubtedly, certain projects could be handled in-house, providing our colleagues with opportunities for skill development and fostering a deeper institutional understanding. Unfortunately, there are instances where the outputs from consultants fall short, adding minimal value despite the substantial costs incurred. This raises concerns about the effectiveness of using consultants for some of our projects. One notable challenge is the tendency to use international consultants over local ones, assuming a broader skill set. However, this preference often overlooks the crucial aspect of understanding the local context. The result? ICGN's Chief Executive, Kerrie Waring, was pleased to be able to attend the OECD - OCDE alignment workshop in Dubai yesterday. Kerrie spoke on the new chapter in the G20/OECD Corporate Governance Principles, which covers corporate sustainability and resilience. The revised G20/OECD Principles of Corporate Governance were endorsed at the G20 Summit on 9-10 September 2023. Revisions were made in the light of recent evolutions both in capital markets and corporate governance practices, to ensure the Principles’ continued standing as the leading international standard for corporate governance. The revised Principles reflect recent evolutions in areas such as corporate ownership and concentration, the growing role of institutional investors and stewardship, the risks corporations face, and the impact of digitalisation. ICGN is pleased to have a keynote address from Daniel Blume, Corporate Governance Head and Senior Policy Analyst, OECD, opening Day 2 of the ICGN-Hawkamah Dubai Conference (#ICGN2023) tomorrow.
