ICYMI: Downsview Framework Plan was chosen as the People's Choice honoree in the “Urban Design – Unbuilt Developments” category at the 2024 AZURE Media AZ Awards Gala in June. Designed with Henning Larsen, SLA, Urban Strategies Inc., and a team of excellent consultants, the Framework Plan proposes the transformation of Downsview Airport into a transit- and community-oriented hub inclusive of affordable housing units for 80,000 residents; a community centre; community-led initiatives like markets, maker spaces and urban farms; a network of green, biodiverse spaces and parks; and thousands of job opportunities. We're thrilled to announce that The Downsview Framework Plan, a joint effort between ourselves, Canada Lands Company / Société Immobilière du Canada, and a diverse team of partners and designers, has been awarded a 2024 National Urban Design Awards. We’re incredibly humbled that our collaborative approach to city-building has been recognized in the Urban Design Plans category. At large, the plan will see Downsview become home to over 80,000 residents and generate more than 40,000 jobs, while incorporating 100 acres of new parkland. Can we afford the Carbon cost of a new building? 🌏 This week has been a story of two tales; the former - a blue-suited conference representing what some see as being the problem with the built environment industry. The latter - the most progressive, passionate, and publicly-engaged client and opportunity i've ever encountered. They are both engaged with the idea of embodied carbon targets, but... - The former looks at what the construction of today's buildings emit and sees a 40% reduction as a bold challenge that might be too ambitious. - The latter starts with what our known remaining carbon budget is to align with a 1.5oC pathway requires, is staggered by what the industry is currently targetting, and asks how we achieve what needs to be done to survive. Whilst I know how challenging it is to currently deliver buildings to 400 kgCO2e/sqm A-C, I hugely applaud and support those that question whether we can afford to build, if our remaining budget is 20 kgCO2e/sqm. We must look at every building we have, and ask ourselves how we can use our existing buildings better. https://lnkd.in/eqTRhr4h
